I would recommend every one of Sage's stories, especially The Symmetrical Transit and The Fallout.

ldymusyc wrote two of my favorite fics. South of Stockholm is a dark Voldemort wins story and Three Steps Forward, One Step Back chronicles the Dramione relationship from the beginning.

For a "newcomer", I recommend all of floorcoaster's work, really! Especially if she wants something "in-character" and not smutty. Floo's work is stuff I would consider "ship converter" or, at least, opening the idea that Draco/Hermione could work. Here are my picks though, in conjunction with yours:

Most of Floo's one-shots are long enough, too.

Here are some more... but I'm just trying to think of stuff I have read previously. Right now I am into my crack and stupid fic. x)

The Magic of Ignorance -- not exactly the in-depth novel-length, but it "cuts" into canon well enough!

Beneath Your Window -- novel-length, post-Hogwarts; not smutty or silly.

I also recommend Elysium and drcjsnider... but the latter might be a bit more comedic than angsty/dark? Maybe if your friend's girlfriend starts to enjoy more light-hearted fic. x) Also, I ♥♥♥ Terra right now; her work is definitely worth checking out.

Ack, I'm finding the non-smut request as difficult as you! Anyways, I tried to pick out some of the darker stories from my favorites. Some of these are NC-17, but I don't think the sex is really blatant in any of these stories (except for FEH, which you should make your friend's gf read anyway, because its ridiculously complex, dark and amazing.)

It's post-Hogwarts, Draco and Hermione are grown-up and this has to be the most adorable Draco known to fandom. I know I love him! It's non-smutty, too. The writing is excellent.
