Well, I don't know what to say, but I read a very good fic once where Lucius was abusive to Draco. If you haven't read it, then you should; it's definitely one of the best fics ever posted in the fandom.

I don't see how we can even debate this still with the release of Deathly Hallows. If you haven't read it, then it may be a bit spoilery for you -- but I think Lucius AND Narcissa prove that the only thing they actually care about is Draco. The final battle, I think, proved that. Instead of fighting they were searching for their son. If Draco and Lucius had that sort of relationship, I'm not sure we would have seen the transformation of the Malfoy family the way we did. Because we see this through the eyes of Harry, he believed the family to be cold and cruel, however, their only REAL loyalty has been and will always be to one another. Everything else seems to just further that along.

guess you missed this part in my original post:
whether or not you refer to/believe in canon is your choice :D i welcome thoughts whether they are from what JK has given us or (as i see my Snape-loving friends do) read between them lines.

i specifically included that for those who were canon-stricter than myself.

I have asked myself this question a few times..and well, I have no answer. I've read many fics where Lucius is an abusive father i.e, he physically and psychologically abuses his son. The fact that he always walks with that cane of his also seems to hint that he does not hesitate to use it as a weapon if necessary, and my mind tells me Draco must have been caned a few times.

However, if you have read DH you will see that the Lucius portrayed is very different. He shows that he truly cares for his son. I mean, he looks for him instead of fighting. So, my guess would be that Lucius was probably a very strict father who sometimes resorted to corporal punishment. You remember how Filch is always trying to convince Dumbledore to re-introduce corporal punishment? Maybe Lucius is the kind of guy who doesn't mind using physical punishment? However, I doubt he would let anyone else but himself correct his son. He's a cold, proud, cruel bastard but he would not be a monster to his own son.

Well, a lot of different interpretations are possible from reading canon, so yes, it's certainly possible that Lucius has abused Draco one way or the other. Personally, I can't imagine Lucius being physically abusive (maybe punished with a slap across the cheek or something, but not Crucio's every time Draco did something wrong), but I'm sure that enough room is present in canon to make anything possible. Making the possibilities seem realistic is something else, though. That would take some persuasion, I think.

That's my two cents. :)

hmmm... I don't the relationship would be 'good', because I highly doubt there was much secret sharing and those things, unless it was dark stuff that had to do with the death eaters and such. I wouldn't imagine Draco confiding in his father much...
I couldn't imagine terrible terrible abuse, what we saw in GOF may be the extent of it. I think it's safe to say that his parents care, obviously Narcissa does..but Lucius just may not know how to show it, I mean look at HIS father...the whole Malfoy line isn't the most "hufflepuff" bunch.
