Notes: Written for
horizonssing Challenge #21. Pretty much crack, influenced by what I had to eat in the past few days. Also, for reference,
this is a Philly cheesesteak,
this is a hoagie, and
this is a Wawa. That'll make sense. And I really hope this is entertaining even if you're not from Philly area. But it was fun to write, and I've always wanted to write something like this.
Disclaimer: I don't anything.
It had been a rough 36 hours for the Torchwood boys. The latest visitors through the rift had managed to escape Cardiff before Torchwood was able to get to them, but luckily Tosh tracked them before they got too far. Well, that was debatable. She was able to specify that the aliens weren’t too far from New York City, so the boys packed up some supplies, a few nights’ worth of clothes, and hopped on the first airplane over to the States.
“So, now what?” Owen asked, once they had retrieved everything from baggage claim and had situated their bags in the back of the rental car.
“We set up Tosh’s navigation system in this SUV,” Jack instructed, “and follow it. Ianto, you drive.”
“Yes, sir,” he replied, walking to the right side of the car. Jack walked around the left to the passenger side, and Owen climbed in the back.
Ianto hopped in, buckled up and reached to put the keys in the ignition, only to find that there was no ignition or steering wheel. He looked over at Jack, in the driver’s seat, and they both burst into laughter as they remembered the difference between American and British cars.
“I guess I’ll drive then,” Jack said, taking the keys from Ianto, and starting the car.
“Remember to stay to the right,” Ianto instructed. Momentarily forgetting what side was the driver’s side wasn’t a big deal, but forgetting what side of the road to drive on could end tragically.
Jack laughed again. “Right.” He turned his head to glance back at Owen, who was fiddling around with Tosh’s equipment. “Owen, where are we going?”
“This says they’ve gone south, probably into south-eastern Pennsylvania,” he replied.
Putting the car in gear and pulling out onto the road, Jack said, “Well, looks like we’re heading to Philadelphia.”
“Always wanted to go there,” Ianto offered. “I’ve heard it’s full of history.”
“Don’t forget bad accents,” Owen added, “and good, greasy food.”

Factoring in obscene New York traffic, it took over two hours to get to Philadelphia. About thirty minutes into the drive, Ianto had put his head back to take a nap. The babble between Owen and Jack was finally starting to wake him up as they got closer and closer to their destination.
“Turn here,” Owen ordered from the backseat.
“Are you sure? This street looks too small,” Jack replied, continuing down the street they were already travelling on.
“Yes,” Owen replied, obviously annoyed. “Now, how the hell are we going to turn around on these little one-way streets?”
“We’ll figure it out,” Jack replied, making a right on the next available street.
Ianto stirred, adjusting himself in his seat and looking around. “Have we found them?”
“Nope, not yet,” Jack answered. “Owen has the location on the GPS.”
Ianto looked around at the tall, skinny houses lining the one way street they were driving down. “Where are we?”
“South Philadelphia,” Owen answered. “There! Turn left there!”
Jack spun the wheel quickly, aiming the rental car down the correct road. “Oh, I see it!” Jack stopped, attempting to parallel park on the narrow street.
“Where?” Ianto asked. “I don’t see any aliens.”
Owen screwed up his face. “Aliens? Oh we found those ages ago as we drove through New Jersey. You were sleeping, like a baby might I add.”
Ianto blushed. “Wait,” he began, “if we already found what we were looking for, why are we here?”
Jack pointed. “What is Philly most famous for?”
Ianto looked puzzled. “The Liberty Bell?”
“The what? No,” Owen replied. “Cheesesteaks.”
Ianto stopped in his tracks on the little street, Jack and Owen walking a little ahead of him. “You mean, we’ve travelled all the way across the ocean and along the east coast to track down aliens, and we end up stopping in a town full of amazing historical landmarks only to ignore them for artery clogging sandwiches?”
Jack and Owen looked at each other and nodded. “Yeah, pretty much,” they replied in unison.
Ianto rolled his eyes, walking a few steps to catch up to his co-workers.
“Hey,” Jack threw his arm around Ianto as they headed for the cheesesteak restaurant, “you could always go to that place over there,” he pointed at a convenience store, “and get a…” he trailed off, squinting at the words on the window, “hoagie.”
“A what?” Ianto looked at his boss funny.
“Hoagie? Are you sure that’s even food?” Owen piped in. “Besides, I don’t think I’d trust anything from a store called Wawa. Sounds like a baby named it.”
“Good point,” Jack agreed as they reached the restaurant.
The three men stood in line, as it was an outdoor restaurant, and waited to place their orders. Once they had each received their sandwich, they sat down at an empty picnic table along the side of the restaurant.
No sooner had Ianto and Owen taken a bite of their Philly cheesesteaks did Jack begin talking.
“So who’s up for New York pizza on our way back to the airport?”
