Jack started Ianto on the long road to recovery with a kiss.

He was broken, left with nothing but the remnants of his heart scattered in pieces on the floor. Lisa had been his world, his first true love, and it was hard for him to let that part of his life go. Jack knew that pain too well; hundreds of men and women had each left their mark on his heart in the form of a scar. It hurt, but the pain was just something he had learned to get used to. And, in time, the scars and the pain would fade to nothing, barely visible to anyone that didn’t know where to look.

Lisa left a scar a mile long on Ianto’s heart, right down the middle, splitting it in half.

The road to recovery was long, full of cracked cement and potholes. Jack became a vehicle for the pieces, carefully steering around the obstacles that might jolt the fragile remains of Ianto’s heart. The gentle kiss on Ianto’s lips was like putting a key into the starter, igniting the engine to prepare the car to drive down the long stretch of highway, until it was time to put the car in park at the final destination.

Jack was careful to mend the rent in Ianto’s heart with soft kisses and kind words of reassurance. It was rough, but sooner or later, the scar would be healed, leaving sad memories and a vague, faded reminder of its presence. But once it was gone, visible only a trained eye, Jack was careful not to leave a scar of his own.

If he did, there’d be no one to drive Ianto home. He’d be on his own, walking miles down the lonely road of recovery by himself, with no one there to stop his heart from completely snapping in half.
