Maureen entered the large skyscraper in downtown New York City where Joanne worked before the end of her workday. They had made plans to meet up and go out to dinner for their two-year anniversary. Two years already. It was almost hard for Maureen to believe.

She entered the lobby and sauntered up to the reception desk. “Hi, I’m looking for Joanne Jefferson.”

The woman sitting at the desk checked a few papers. “She’s wrapping up a court case at the moment. She will be out shortly. You can take a seat while you wait for her.”

“Great, thanks.” Maureen walked a few steps to the row of chairs against a dark wall and took a seat next to a young man with dark brown eyes and hair. He’s kinda cute…

“Excuse me,” he said.

Maureen looked up at him. She wasn’t staring at him; she hoped he didn’t think she was. “Yes?”

“Did you say you were looking for Joanne Jefferson?” he inquired. When Maureen nodded, he asked, “Are you a good friend of hers?”

“We’re close,” she replied casually.

“If you have a minute…” he began. She nodded again. “I’m a colleague of hers and I don’t know if you noticed, but she’s a very pretty girl.” Maureen nodded yet again. Very pretty girl? Joanne was fucking hot. “If you ever get the chance, look into her eyes. They’re the most gorgeous shade of brown. And I love what she does with her hair, the way it curls so perfectly.” He sighed. “She’s beautiful. Sorry if this is a guy thing, but I’ve always wondered if she’s any good in bed.”

Maureen smirked, trying not to laugh out loud. “Well…”

“I was thinking of asking her out. Is there anything I should know?”

“Yeah, there is,” Maureen replied. “She’s dating someone.”

The man’s face fell. “Oh. He’s a very lucky guy.”

“That’s awful close-minded of you,” she narrowed her eyebrows.

“…what?”

Before Maureen could make a witty comment, she caught sight of Joanne entering the lobby. The lawyer gave her girl a wave from the elevator door. “Pookie!” she yelled, leaving the man sitting in his chair, still confused. Maureen wrapped Joanne in a hug when she got closer, kissing her softly on her lips.

Joanne smiled back at her. “Sorry I took so long.” She looked over her girlfriend’s shoulder at the man sitting on the chair. “Oh hi, Jeff. I see you met Maureen?”

He nodded, his face going a brilliant shade of red.

“Well, I’ll see you on Monday,” she said, waving goodbye.

“Byeee!” Maureen cooed obnoxiously, her hand drifting low on Joanne’s back. “It was sooooo nice to meet you!” She couldn’t help but grin wildly as his blush deepened.

“I hope you weren’t bored waiting for me,” Joanne leaned her head against Maureen’s shoulder as they headed towards the restaurant. “Jeff usually makes the worst conversation.”

“Oh believe me, your friend kept me very entertained.”

“Surprising.”

Maureen shrugged. “He has great taste in women.”

Joanne looked at her funny. “I don’t even want to know.”
