“AAAAHHHH!” Maureen screamed, holding onto the bedrails for dear life. “Holy shit, this hurts.”
“Shh, it’ll be all right,” a soft voice comforted. A hand touched her forehead, wiping away the sweat and pushing her wet locks behind her ears.
Maureen looked over to the owner of the hand and voice. Benny. Why was Benny here? Why was she here? “Aaahh,” she said again. A throbbing pain came from between her legs. Oh yes. A baby. She was having a baby. Maureen didn’t remember being pregnant, but she dismissed the thought and decided she was just delirious from whatever drug she was given.
“It’s coming,” a doctor said.
A few more screams, a few more pushes, and a few more excited smiles.
“AAAHHHH,” Maureen gave one more final scream.
“It’s a…”
Maureen sat up with a start. “Oh my god.”
“Mmphh,” the body beside her mumbled.
She felt around the bed, finding an arm. “Mark?”
“Yeah?” the blond sat up, rubbing his eyes and fumbling around for his glasses. “What’s wrong?”
“I just had the worst dream!” she said. “I was having a baby.”
Even in the dark, Maureen could see the puzzled and hurt look on Mark’s face. “What’s so bad about that?”
“It was Benny’s,” she replied dryly.
Mark smiled a little. “I’d call that a nightmare.”
