Summary: Veronica broke up with Logan. And she’s fine. Really she is(n’t).

It started out as something so small. I didn’t even realize what was going on right away, and I’m still not sure that anyone else has caught on. Surely one of them would’ve called me on it if they had.

****

“I heard about you and Logan. How’re you holding up?”

“I’m fine.”

It all started with Wallace. Not that I’m blaming him, because God knows it’s not his fault. Something about the way he nodded his head in response told me that he knew what was going on right away, but he didn’t say anything. He wouldn’t say anything. Not that soon.

****

“Logan and I broke up…again. My idea this time.”

“Ah, I am sorry. You doing okay?”

“I’m fine.”

It was easier to fool dad. He was too wrapped up in his own stuff, and Dean O’Dell’s murder case, to really notice. Not that he didn’t care, because I know that he did. If I’d wanted to talk about it, he would’ve been there to listen. Even if he never was fond of Logan.

****

“Wallace told me what happened. Are you…”

“I’m fine.”

Okay, I might’ve been a bit grumpier than necessary with Piz. But really, at that point I was just tired of being asked. Tired of constantly being looked at like I was going to fall to pieces because Logan Echolls was no longer my boyfriend. I mean, didn’t any of them realize that I broke up with him? That it was my decision? Shouldn’t that be enough to prove that I’m fine?

****

“Parker told me that she’s going out with Logan tonight. She said he talked to you about it first. Are you alright?”

“I’m fine.”

I have to admit, I kind of felt sorry for Mac. She had to be in a tough spot. On one hand, she was happy that Parker had finally found someone that she liked and that she could relax and have a good time with. But on the other hand, it was my ex-boyfriend. So maybe she knew the truth, but she still didn’t say anything. I guess it was safer not to. If she admitted that she knew, she’d feel obligated to try to stop Parker from going on the date. And really…could she do that? No. So she just nodded and stayed quiet.

****

He didn’t have to say anything at all. Just seeing him standing there looking at me, waiting for me to say something…anything…was enough to make my newfound mantra start a never ending loop in my head.

I’m fine. I’m fine. I’m fine. I’m fine. I’m fine. I’m fine. I’m fine…

“I’m fine. How are you?”

The slightest raise of his eyebrows was enough to tell me that he didn’t believe me. He knew the truth. They all did. But none of them had called me on it. Because they knew something else…something that I was just now coming to realize. They knew that I was the only one who’d ever believed my lie.
