Scarleteen

I'm glad so many people have chosen to do the photo meme. It's nice to have faces to put with the pseudonyms.

Yesterday, audrawilliams posted about the website Scarleteen. As a person who works in sex education, I kind of embarrassed to admit that I never knew this website existed. After having had a good look around, I must reiterate audrawilliams assessment. It is ( Read more... )

intarbets, sex

I wonder if Shelley would let me drop off some Scarleteen flyers at the store. Do you know if the store stocks her book?

I wonder if we could bring her up here for a signing and fundraiser, maybe?

Thanks so much for donating!! I really appreciate it, and I know Heather does, too.

That book has been at the store before. Books at VE come and go. There's really no consistency in the stock... it kind of rotates depending on the whim of the book ordering person and whether or not they think that the last copy sold fast enough or if they even noticed that the last copy sold, etc.

I'd LOVE to hear Heather Corinna speak. She should totally come to Ottawa (and Toronto!)

She totally would! I wonder if we could do a Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto thing for her.

How does one go about booking that kind of thing?

You can either host it yourself (find a venue, do promo, etc) or you can pitch it to local sheroes and hot spots who'd do it for you. (some dykey performance art folks in Montreal, Venus Envy, Come As You Are, etc). I've done it both ways.
I'd also suggest teaming up with another author who is more local, as their networks are great to use to get people in the seats. e.g. Zoe Whittal could use some promotion as she's in pre-publication for her next book of poetry, Precordial Thump. She's from TO and has literary connections in Mtl & Ottawa.

Yay! Heather is a friend of mine and I know she can use the money to help keep Scarleteen going. The book is good, too. I donated a copy to my high school library. I subscribe to her site, too, as a way of donating a few dollars every month.

My favourite Heather story is when she had to take my (now ex) father-in-law aside at my (ill-fated) wedding and tell him "YOU HAVE TO STOP TOUCHING ALL OF THE WOMEN."

I don't know tonnes, but I have heard of Scarleteen before, and heard very good things about it.

And you're so right about stereotypes via romance novels and male-directed porn/magazines.
