Runaway Life

Working at Venus Envy has given me a lot: the opportunity to work at something fun, a new circle of friends, some extra pocket cash and all-you-can-read access to sexy books. It's also twenty hours out of my week. And that twenty hours is the difference between a schedule that was full and life that has become too much for me to deal with well ( Read more... )

response: twenty plus, rantings: life rant, venus envy

Here's hoping that you're able to get it all settled into a manageable, happy-making life! It's hard, but it's great that you know overall what you want. I hope you don't have to cut too many enjoyable but not as essential commitments.

I'm hoping that I'll only need to make relatively minor modifications to my schedule. I rather get a lot out of fewer endeavours than doing a lot of thing half-assedly.

I know that cutting back on things you enjoy is really hard. I'm proud of you for accepting that you can't do it all. As always, I'm here for you every step of the way.

Being out 4 to 5 nights a week is too much for me to deal with right now.

I'll certainly be too much when you have kids.

However, ironically, artistically speaking, I sometimes find I get more done with less free time.

I've been speaking to a few local artist-types who are also parents. They said the same thing, that having kids and therefore less free time has actually forced them to be more focused and driven in their creative pursuits.

(gee...run-on sentence much?)

Explosion?

Yes, finding a balance is good. Prioritizing is good. E-mail and LJ suck up an astonishing amount of time.

Now, e.g., before the arrival of a child, is an excellent time to hone these skills and really get to know your limits and your priorities. It would be best to not go through this process *during*.

P.S. There are a number of poeple in my life who are talking about babies and asking about stuff.

I was considering writing a "Top 10" list of things you need to know/think about when it comes to babies entering your life. I want to help, but I don't want to push my opinions on you or others. Do you think this would be useful, or just annoying in a busybody sort of way? I mean, this isn't rocket science and the info. is available a ton of other places, I presume.

Personally, I would *love* to read a top ten list written by someone who knows. And given that you're self-employed, I'd be especially grateful for any tips on how to juggle kids, work and a relationship :)
