As per my New Year's resolution, I've spent that past couple of days working on a painting. Save for a class I took last winter, I have no real painting skillz, mad or otherwise. Bearing this in mind, I'm pretty pleased with the way this one turned out.*

It's not your fault. There are so few examples of proper stick figure drawing form in modern art.

what does your painting say about the mass consumerist culture it depicts? the multiplicity of colours would suggest to me a brightness that is ignorant of its sustainability...

Um, yeah...what you said.

Sadly, it's not meant to be a commentary on anything except my love of bold colours. But if anyone else asks can I steal your interpretation? Then I can claim that I spent the past two days working to bring about social awareness.

I really like this painting. It's bright, fun, cheerful. It's a summer shopping spree with girlfriends. I like that it's 3 friends and not only 2. I love the chartreuse bag just off centre.

They're tired, happy and heading off for a iced tea.

Happy art.

Iced tea! Nuh-uh, they're going for gelato!

Duh.

I like the bag too; it makes me think it's in mid-swing, like the holder is in a good mood and is swinging their arms, carefree, happy.

I love the detail and the palate. Beautiful.

DQ23, when your alter ego in the play painted, I assumed this was a translation of artistic outlet from your acting to a more visually accessible medium for depiction in a stage play, I had no idea you actually painted, and very well it seems. I swear I'm not doing that thing where friends look astonished that what you've written or sung or performed or pained is good... I'm usually amused and mock hurt, but still...

Good for you, keep at it!

Actually, it was writing the play that prompted me to start painting more. I used to draw quite a bit as teenager, but I never had much skill with the brush. Writing Letters After Z helped me realize that despite not being great, painting might be a fun thing for me to try. So I took a class, loved it and voila! New hobby.

Beautiful!

And so realistic!

Thank you! I'm glad you think it's realistic. If you get close to it, it just looks like a big mess of colour.

One of my coworkers does ultra realistic stuff, it's amazing: http://www.urbanrealism.com/cafeindex.htm

Up close it's quite pixellated, for lack of a better word, but two paces back and you'd swear it was a photograph.

Thank you! And yay! You're an art teacher, so your approval makes me feel extra validated.
