i was having a conersation with zachary fields, christian langloise, and mrs collins and mr bedrosian. we were discussing how boston people, like us, call "sprinkles" jimmies (we were at an ice cream social) and i so politely said "wait, i've always known the rainbow colored ones as sprinkles and the chocolate ones as jimmies" so i told them i'd ( Read more... )

"Jimmies" is actually racial slang. A long time ago, some little racist person thought that chocolate sprinkles resembled little black men. I'm not sure why they are called "jimmies" and not "niggers" (or something more overtly racist), but either way, at least you now know the term's origin.

I'm pretty sure the term jimmies was borrowed from the racial slur, given that chocolate sprinkles are brown. Still, they're pretty much jimmies in New England, and sprinkles most other places, don't ask me why.
