A couple of years ago, I was with Ali and the other girls when she decided to throw a stinkbomb into Toby's garage. She told us he'd been watching us while we were trying on clothes and stuff, and that we should do something to make him pay ( Read more... )

How'd this Ali chick manage to keep you all scared?

She, um.

There was a lot she knew. I think she knew more about us all than we ever did about her. And she knew how to keep us in line.

And once she's got one thing, she can use it to get more and more and more, huh? That type.

Something like that.

I don't know. At the time she just seemed so much more mature than we were so I guess we always trusted that she knew what she was doing. Which, I suppose, she did.

Accidents happen, but it's generally better to admit that you made a mistake, and do what you can in the future to prevent the same sort of mistake from happening. Trying to cover it up tends to just make things worse.

I wish we had. That way we wouldn't all be worrying about whether we're going to be found out now that Ali's gone.

You can still own up to it, you know. It would be much better to come clean with it than to get found out.

You'll probably be punished for it, yes, and it won't be much fun, but you wouldn't have it hanging over your head anymore.

I guess...if it was just me, I'd agree. But we all promised each other we wouldn't say anything. Unless I can persuade the others to change their minds, I'm not sure I can do anything.

That's pretty scary, Aria.

I try not to think about it too much. When I do I just remember how freaked out I was at the time.

Is that...common for your world? I'm just curious!

Um...not really? I mean, it was just supposed to be a stupid prank, to get back at Toby for watching us. What happened wasn't what was supposed to happen.

That's terrible. I'm sorry, Aria.

No need to be sorry, 11-12. If anyone should be, it's me. I just...ugh, I don't know why I even thought that I needed to say anything. But thank you.

There's some virus going around again.

That would explain it, I suppose. Seems a lot of people are treating this like some community-wide Truth Day.

I don't like the sound of this Ali person.

At the time, I thought of her as one of my best friends. But it turns out there was a lot we didn't know about her.

So you're not friends anymore?

No. She, um, she went missing just over a year ago. A few months ago they found her body buried in what was her family's garden.
