It seems like the perfect complement to me. One works to apprehend criminals, and the other makes sure that they receive and carry out their sentence. Most police stations actually have their own private lawyer, to make sure that the detectives operate within the law.

I don't think we've spoken before. I'm Naoto Shirogane, and I'm a detective aiding Hakuba in the Kaitou Kid case.

Um, yes. We're... partners of sorts. He graciously allowed me to aid him with his case. We failed to apprehend Kid during his latest heist, but we're hard at work on a new plan of action.

Well, the lawyer actually tries not to defend the criminals, though it's mostly depends on their personalities, actually.
