LJ presents: Strange Horizons, part five

I've now seen Avengers: Age of Ultron twice, thanks to (a) stareyednight winning a Marvel/Disney competition and (b) bc_scrubs' access to $10 movie tickets. I enjoyed it both times. If the original Avengers film was a 9.5/10 (being as close-to-perfect as a super hero team movie can be), I'd rate the sequel a solid 9/10. The glitch, for me, was the number of info dumps ( Read more... )

That . . . I did not see coming . . .

. . . and it's brilliant. Stone cold brilliant, making total sense in hindsight and setting up one whole host of questions. I cannot wait to see the resolution!

Re: Ultron - having now seen it, I suspect the reason they went the route they did is probably so that all Ultron's various hang-ups and neuroses were easily read in a very short space of time, which a colder version would have obscured. Getting to the raging heart of the character by warming up his exterior, so to speak.

"Mush"? Gah! Oh, how I long for the days when LJ's stories were simple and quick to write up... actually that's a total lie, and I don't long for those days at all, because the things she's coming up with are wonderous to behold.

I, too, did not see this twist coming - didn't even suspect it - and was caught completely off-guard. It's a masterstroke and, again, speaks to the (perhaps subconsciously) deeper level of her more recent tales.

I can see the tabloid headlines now;
In bed with Dread!: How Earth's Sorcerer Supreme diddled Dormammu

And I can never unsee it... gah, my eyes...

I like the sneeky upgrades and such a good way to do it in story without needing extensive exposition or a Stark building montage.

Originally, all of those upgrades were to fold in slowly, over the course of several stories. Then we bought the Lego pieces and LJ understandably wanted to use them straight away. I grinned and said "well, you do have a reality-warper on the team..." and the rest is literary history.
