I've always said that, the day LJ decides to stop playing
her games, I'll accept it without question. Today I realised I was very, very wrong about that. On the way to school, LJ made an off-hand comment about readying "the big ending" and, during my working day, I found myself wanting to change her mind. So tonight I apologised for my earlier mistake and explained my epiphany: how the weekend games are a creativity outlet for me as well, how happy they make me and how, in short, I wasn't ready to stop playing yet.
LJ looked at me with wry amusement. "That's great and all, Dad, but I was only talking about the big ending to my present day stories. I've tonnes of ideas for games where the
children of the heroes work with their parents." That's when the sarcasm kicked in. "But I really do appreciate your confession and promise to take it on-board in my decision-making."
Suitably embarrassed (when did she become such a smartie pants?), I followed the kidlet into her room so we could start dreaming. We decided we didn't need a "big ending"; the
last few stories tied off any dangling plot threads. Better, then, to jump straight into the future. Not the dark, depressing world created by Ultron's victory but the
"happily ever after" reality brought about by its defeat. A world in which our lead characters - Ironclad, Sunbeam, Quickdraw and Shield Maiden - study at a super hero high school and fight alongside their legendary parents against Villainville's rotten denizens.
And the ideas we've already had! Combat training sessions with guest lecturer Wolverine (ouch)! Luthor and Joker's crew moving back into Villainville for their own safety! Doom locking himself in his tower out of misery, more or less ceding leadership to his "grandson" Kang! Thor as overprotective father, his daughter
Torunn rebelling... and falling into the clutches of Enchantress, who's gone "fairytale queen crazy" with jealousy! Pompous and proud Damien "Robin" Wayne taking on all comers, only to meet his match in Bane! The kids going on a field trip to Arkham Asylum, which is being haunted by the
Nth metal statue of Gentleman Ghost! And, worst of all, Ultron-9 standing dormant in Tony Stark's lab... watching... recording... waiting to come back online...
Honestly? I can't wait.
