Henry's ability was the manipulation and externalization. He didn't have complete control over his abilities, and they were heavily influenced by his emotions.
When Henry found out about the war he was terrified that he was going to have to play a large part in it. I can only assume that's what triggered the mistake.
Henry unknowingly manipulated the dreams of the Dreamseers, causing them to switch our roles.

Or so I'm told. I'm still... a little unclear as to what precisely happened.
