Throughout this job hunt, I've often wondered what other people do for a living and how they came about getting that job. So, flist, I ask you, what's your job and how did you get it? Maybe I can pick up a few tips.:)

I'm a marketing coordinator. I design ads for trade magazines, write little write-ups, design and write case studies (about 1-2 pages), design and write brochures advertising our products (1-16 pages) and just all around keeping sales reps happy and supplied with these items. It's pretty much what I've wanted to do since about my 4th year of college, when I realized I didn't want to write for newspapers.

Long story short on how I got my job: temping as a receptionist for engineering consultants firm, opening in marketing dept that I was offered and took (was doing minimal work, just organizing packets and wrote basic case studies) and then HATED it months later. Looking for job to come back for, was offered this position (they found me on monster.com) and voila!

I know I complain about my job a lot, but I do like doing what I do. Just wish I had more on my plate to counter the boredom and down periods.

Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that downtime. I could work on my novel.:)

I work for a non-profit transportation management group. we get our funding from the state of NJ and Federal Highway as well as member muncipalities to help with getting single drivers off the road by using carpooling and transit.

I got my job through a temp agency. I started out as a temp and they hired me permanently about two months later.

Prior to that I worked in the banking world.

*sigh* I got my job because my aunt dragged me in as a Temporary Administrative assistant and eventually a position opened up and they offered me a permanent job but screwed me over by giving me a lower salary because I don't have "expereince" so yeah. I hate my job. I think if I stay for another year or so I will kill myself. *headdesk*

Yeah, I admit having income is definately a relief. I remember the couple months when I didn't have a job. It was very saddening to see my checking account go down everytime bills came around.

I hope you get a job soon!

I am a buyer for a state university. I basically get paid to spend money. I found an administrative assistant position open in the purchasing department and applied. I worked for a year as an admin then my boss promoted me.

Well, I'm a commis chef (the lowest level of chef possible). I mostly cut veggie all day. Sometimes I get to cook but with a reorganization at work I mostly cut veggies.

A bit of a story about how I got this job. When I moved to the UK two years ago I worked for a temp agency doing admin work. Hated it. Quit and then found out that we had to move from our house so I needed to find perminent employment ASAP. I applied everywhere that had a help wanted ad in the window in town. It didn't matter if I liked the work or not because I just needed to hold onto something until the paperwork for the house went through. The place I currently work at employed me as a counter assistant on their deli. A year after that the chefs took pity on me and took me on as a commis.
