I think when Emma put her son up for adoption, the Queen took him in deliberately. She knows who Emma is, and what she can do, and is smart enough to know that having custody of Emma's son is a good way to get some leverage over her should she suddenly try to believe the story and do something about it.
I'll be honest, I wasn't that impressed with the pilot. Maybe because of the way they chose to portray the fairy tale world? (Well, and they left out some of my favorite fairy tales but I suppose with a whole town of fairy tale characters, they'll get to them eventually. ;-) ) But I'll give it a few more episodes. All the magazines are praising its originality and, well, it is that, if not terribly deep just yet.
I am also not sold on OUAT as a weekly series for the long haul, but am completely open to it and hope it will succeed, as it's successfully intrigued me. xoxo
