Well, broadly speaking, various runes summon various creatures. There are four major classes of rune each with five subclasses.

Glamour is the summoning of natural spirits such as elves and fairies. Alchemy is the manipulation of life and matter to create your own creatures. Necromancy is a holy art used to draw up the spirits of those passed. And Sorcery is the summoning of devils and probably one of the more difficult magics if your easily tempted by their wiles. Though who would ever be tempted by someone as utterly oily and slimy as Mr. Advocat must be a few cards short of a deck...
