The trip to the waterpark last Friday went so well, with the girls so well behaved that I am now inspired to do all sorts of crazy things on my own with them. Brian's work retreat might be the week of the homeschooler's gathering at the waterpark in February? No problem! I can take them on my own! I think that's a really useful and smart tactic to use with kids. My folks were always really good about saying to us, "OK, we're going to a restaurant/Aunt Dorthy's/a party, and A, B, and C is the behavior we expect from you. There will be no X, Y, or Z." Frequent reminders and all that jazz. Plus with the money thing, we just knew there wasn't extra for all the happy crap other kids got all the time, and honestly? We didn't really care. We had the essentials and we knew we'd get things we wanted for birthdays and Christmas, so big whoop. We never went to Disneyland or vacationy trips that didn't involve visiting family, and we didn't care. We didn't ski like a lot of our peers out here, we didn't have TVs in our bedrooms and junk like that ( ... )
