I don't know how to pick an excerpt for reading, but I do recommend reading aloud on your own before you do it for an audience. I often read D&D texts aloud before reading them to my players to prevent me from stumbling. (I mean, when the villain is Abrinxenphyrinc--a name I did not make up, by the way--it's a nice plan to already have it said a few times *before* your players look at you funny...)
I'm sure that's not actually helpful advice, but take it for what it's worth! I'm so glad you're getting an event. :)
