Staying in rooms with more than 4 people

Aug 19, 2012 21:00

Hi, I have a question about full hotel rooms. I am staying in a room of more than 3 other people and most hotel rooms are not that big.  My question, what would be the best solution to finding floor space so I am not fighting over space on the floor with other roommates?

I could use some suggestions and tricks that might help.

roommate requests, rooms, offsite hotels

I have tips! Depending on how much space you usually need to sleep (if you move around a lot, or not at all), the area by the window is the best, followed by the space in between the beds (just be sure the people in the beds are very aware you are there, so they don't step on you!). If you don't need much space, there is sometimes space between one of the beds and the wall (the bed furthest from the window). Otherwise, 2 people can fit near the window, and if you aren't concerned about hitting your head, there's often a good amount of floor space under the desk :) Also, in front of the beds, but be careful because those are prime walkways ( ... )

Thank you so much. What about the hallway that leads into the bathroom area where you are away from the door facing a certain angle? Would that be a bad suggestion?

Yeah, definitely a possibility, but make sure you're not in the way of the bathroom doorway in case someone has to go at night. And pack all the bedding up as soon as you wake up in the morning :)

no help on sleeping arrangements, but when you have that many people in a room and you do let the maids in.... TIP WELL! they'll be less likely to rat you out!

First one to the room smushes as much of the extra "furniture" to the corners of the room.

Everyone picks a home for their stuff/luggage.

We had a fold up cot one year, somewhat treacherous, other yrs air mattresses that can be stowed when not in use.

TIP. Keep the place relatively clean so on checkout its not completely trashed. have all your recyclables sorted, towels gathered up...take a bit of care and make it easy on staff.

ETA: with multiple keys, it can be helpful to put a sticker on each with the person's name/nickname or some kind of thing, so that everyone has control of their OWN key. We had a roomie who'd pick up ALL the keys without thinking. when they were labelled, we didn't have any issues!

Ah yeah, the thing with keys...you can get 4 max at the start, and if you need more, just have the person who's name is on the room bill go to the front desk and ask for an extra key, or better yet, put a second person's name on the bill and have them go and say they need an extra key. Hotels won't ask why, but if you feel you need to give a reason, just say you misplaced yours.

I've never had an issue. We asked for 5 one year and no one blinked. I lost a key, they gave me two.

Hotels will do a lot if people are polite, well mannered and patient. I watched someone else go off on them for an elevator being out and she threw such a SNIT they did the bare minimum for her, and went out of their way for me. :D

It really does work. Don't be a jerk to hotel staff, treat them like gold, and they can make the stay a wonder. We travel a lot, and this mentality shows, the people pitching fits get nothing, the people acting like mature adults will get much better treatment.

We stay at the same hotel every yr because they really do treat us well. Last year just as we checked in they had a major computer crash, and we had a long delay on top of a long day of travel. They made it right for us.

I think I am always just paranoid and so I don't ask for more than 4 at first ^^;

But yeah, treat the hotel staff really well and be super nice and courteous and polite (and patient) and they will likely over-look you over-filling a room even if they knew you were :)

Tip well, don't do the bare minimum. It's a good idea to make sure your roomies save money for tipping, too. I (as the room leader for the people I go to D*C with) often get caught taking care of the house-keeping tip myself because sometimes I forget to remind everyone else to chip in a few bucks xP

we've often had 6 people in our room in past years. 2 people per bed, then we take both mattress covers off the beds to make a new bed on the floor for two more. add some blankets and it's not that bad! usually the best spot for the floor bed is by the window so no one gets stepped on.

Also, if someone doesn't mind and there's space, sleep in a chair/ottoman combo. I did that one year in the Marriott and it was actually comfortable, like sleeping an upright recliner. I'd suggest turning it to where you can face the window if possible. Gives more floor space for the rest.
