Question for Marriott Marquis Veterans...

I'm not completely sure how it is decided WHICH room you get at the Marriott upon check-in. Like, is it possible to say 'Can I get a room that's as high as possible?' or vice versa? I'm assuming it's based on what is available/clean when you get there and are ready to check-in. I'm mainly asking because I'm arriving Thursday (to avoid the Friday ( Read more... )

You can request when you check in and if they have it available, they are usually accommodating. I always get a handicap accessible room since I have to park a scooter inside but I do request near the elevators so its easier to ride the scooter straight into the room door instead of having to make tight turns and try to line up at the door. We've usually been accommodated if we get there early enough before all HA rooms are handed out. I've had friends request high up rooms because of noise and they've usually gotten what they request and they arrive on Fri. afternoon. Just ask and I know at the Marriott, we've never had a problem.

Thursday is now the madhouse check-in day, and Wednesdays are the new Thursdays. That said, every time I've checked in on Thursday, Marriott has had their shit together - plenty of available rooms, definitely willing to accommodate requests when they can. (I attempted to check into a fully booked hotel for an event this weekend and could not have missed the Marriott more. Despite knowing they were fully booked, the hotel did not have any rooms ready and forced nearly everyone to wait until 3pm to check in. Cue hundreds of people milling around in the lobby, waiting for hours. Fun times.)

One thing to keep in mind with the bank of elevators that take care of the top floors is that there are fewer of them (only three) compared to the four or five elevators at the other banks. However, ALL of the elevators go to the 10th floor. If you don't mind the lobby/10th floor noise and are willing to take stairs, any floor between eight and twelve should be good and you can take whatever bank of elevators has the shortest wait.

We always ask for the highest floor possible and we've never had a problem getting one. And yeah, I've never experienced the kind of waits people complain about at the Marriott, because we're always on that back elevator bay with the uppermost floors. I can't even remember waiting more than five minutes, unless it was Monday at check out time and we were waiting to go down.

I do think most people who stay in the hotels get there in Thursday, so if you want to avoid madness you might want to check in early. We're usually in on Thursday before 10am and it's always been quick.

when i arrive on thursday the first thing i do is check into the hilton. so far, have never had a problem getting my preferred room (fifth floor, so i can rock the stairs when the elevators get clogged. :) even if the room itself isn't ready, they still check me in (which is fine with me--i'm usually spending the next several hours standing around outside the sheraton, anyway).

you should be fine, dan.

In my experience if you get to the Marriott before about 12pm you stand a better chance of getting the room you want.

From my experience they will try to give you the room that least meets your needs, no matter when you check in. I have checked in 3 out of 5 times with them and have yet to receive a double bed, regardless of paying more and specifying 4 people staying with me. They usually offer a roll-away bed but considering how early I check in they obviously have double rooms left.

Oh, and I'm checking in Wednesday this year. Still expect to have issues with my room.
