Some thoughts regarding line formation, megapanels, and room clears

I've seen some worry on this community about getting in to see the Shatner/Nimoy panel (or one of the others, but this panel seems to be the most worrisome). If you are worried about getting the Best Seat Ever Omg, you should probably go ahead and continue making whatever camping plans you're working on (that won't get you kicked out by the hotel ( Read more... )

So for those of us who would like to get optimal seating for the Nemoy/Shatner gig, what would be the earliest someone would suggest to set our alarms for to get in line that morning for decent seating? :)

As early as the hotels will let you, lol. Honestly, this combination is so legendary, and both actors are getting on enough in years, that I wouldn't want to miss it for anything. This panel has a VERY high likelihood of never happening again (not at Dragoncon, anyway). What's more important to you - a few extra minutes of sleep, or seeing freakin' Shatner and Nimoy?

I may stop by the hotel tomorrow and ask them what their policies about that are, if any. I live nearby, and I'll be walking by that area tomorrow on the way to work anyway, so it wouldn't be a problem. If they tell me anything specific, I guess I can make a post to the community to let people know?

Caveat emptor: I'm having a sinus headache, with Tylenol PM treatment. You can tell by the way I screw up typing simple sentences. I'll be lucky to get out of here with even passable punctuation!

Based upon my Reading Comprehension Skills Check (I have a 22, but took a -4 modifier for aforementioned sinus+drugs) of the Original Post, I'm going to recommend that you, personally, having gotten your badge Thursday night, get in line at 7:30 a.m. Follow:

Figure in ten or so minutes to get the pass and another ten to figure out where the Marriott is and walk to it, and the earliest they can get in line is 8:20 -- if they're lucky. If you're there by 8-8:15, all the one-day-pass folks will be getting in line behind you

So if sensible people are getting in the frontish part of the line at eight, you want to be in line a bit earlier than that ... but not so early that the hotel suspects you of Loitering and calls Security. Five a.m. would probably be exceptionally excessive; we're not SDCC, lining up five hours ahead of time is

So, if I were to get into the Shatner/Nimoy panel and then want to turn right around and go to the Stargate Atlantis panel afterward in the same room, I'd likely be screwed, huh? I'd have to leave the room and then get in the very back of the line that formed while Shat and Nimoy were talking, so I'd be in a tough spot. Definitely bad seats (not a huge deal to me) but maybe not getting in (I might die).

Hm...didn't think about that.

Looks like Shatner and Nimoy might be out for me. I was dying to see them, but neither one of them is Paul McGillion. He's proven to be greatness to me in person, while one of the others was mean to Wil Wheaton once, so...

Hm...let me think. PAUL!

Think on this I must.

Incidentally, what think ye of my odds of making Stewart/Mulgrew after the parade in light of your info on room size and whatnot?

Yeah, you'd have to leave the room when it cleared and then join the end of the Supergate panel line. You might be in a little more luck there than you think -- there are several Stargate panels over the weekend and so people might figure that they can catch a later one rather than getting in line early for that one. Again, I can't be sure, but since at least some people made travel plans based on a 1pm Friday start time, I don't think the con is going to be as crowded as it could be on Friday morning ( ... )

Cool. Thanks for your input. The panel on Friday is not a Supergate panel. It's just SGA. Still, for me, if Paul is there, I'm there. I'll be at all the SG panels. At least that was my plan. It sounds like lines aren't nearly as much of an issue at D*C as I thought (this is my first D*C, I'm an experienced con goer in general -all I'd ever heard about lines at D*C was long, but it looks like the rumor mill's idea of long and mine are very different things), so I think I'll still try for both. I suppose maybe I can miss one Paul panel. Maybe. ;-)

As for the parade, I'm marching in it, so no skipping that!

I wonder if some sort of list or numbering system might help organize things a little bit better? Shatner/Nimoy is definitely a legendary combination, and I'd hate for things to get ridiculous.

That said, I think I'm probably going to go ahead and camp out as early as the hotel will let me. I live three blocks away, so, why not? :D

I'm curious. If some reason I am unable to make it to the Shatner/Nimoy panel (fingers crossed that I will get in), can I watch the rebroadcast from one of the hotel bars at 1PM? I don't have a room, but I know DCTV is sometimes on there. (Although then I would miss Terry Gilliam, which I'm desperately looking forward to). If all that fails, can I watch the panel rebroadcast online from my home late that night?

I don't know whether the bars will be running DCTV. Some of them have in the past; you can always make nice to the bartender and see if they'll put it on if it isn't already. The only time I could see it being an issue is when a football game is on; I think Georgia's playing that weekend? (dunno) but I'd imagine you could get at least one TV going.

I'm pretty sure we won't be putting the panels online, though spambrian or pdfunplugged can correct me if I'm wrong. There are rather a lot of issues involved with that, not the least of which is that all our DCTV folks will be onsite running cameras, editing parade footage, etc. and so won't have time to upload to the website. There are probably also legal issues the likes of which I've no idea.

Is Shatner/Nimoy in the Southeast US something that hasn't happened before?Shatner and Nimoy have been attending cons together for years. I know about Pasadena/Burbank/Los Angeles, Las Vegas and NY/NJ. I don't know about the Southeast.

They're good friends and they put on a good show together.

I saw them together previously at the big 20th or 25th anniversary Star Trek con up in NY/NJ back in the late 80's or early 90's. I do remember it being a good show, and it was an awful lot of fun. Don't recall if they've ever done the Southeast US together before though.
