Is the pre-registration post card absolutely necessary? I never got one mailed to me and I'm getting really nervous about that.

From other posts I have seen, no, the card is not necessary. But do be sure to bring a form of ID. If possible, try to bring a print out of your receipt from the purchase of your pass.

Last year they didn't even ask for my postcard, so you should be ok.

I hope this helps to ease your fears.

Cash. Everybody's so used to using plastic all the time, or being able to go to a nearby ATM when they need it, that they forget that that doesn't quite work at con. ;)

Or the few ATMs at the con get wiped out of cash quickly.

Definitely cash. I was a newbie last year and walked into the Walk of Fame with my plastic...and the ATM machine ran out of money about 3 hours in, so definitely cash.

Um...sheet protectors and a binder (if you're an autograph/photo op whore like I am). Deodorant. Breath mints. Extra batteries. Phone charger. Paper/notebooks to exchange phone numbers, email addresses, etc. CAMERA!!! And maybe an extra memory card, just in case.

Oh yeah, most importantly, hand sanitizer!!!!!

There's no telling what you might forget until you get there. :p But a few odds and ends that first-timers might not think of are:

~A bottle/cup to carry around for water and such.
~Meal bars. They're nice to have when running from one panel to another and having no time for lunch.
~Camera battery/charger.
~Some pocket-sized game to play while waiting in long lines.
~DVDs/books/CDs for your favorite celebrity's signature, if you think that'd be better than getting it on their random headshot. (I much prefer collecting signatures this way.)
~A lanyard for your badge, if pre-registered. The ones that come with them are sort of dinky and tend to snap off.
~Shoes that don't blister up your feet. You're going to do a lot of walking.

Regarding the lanyard, do they give you one (even if it's dinky) if you pre-registered? I've got my yellow card, and I'm wondering if I need to buy a lanyard ahead of time for my badge.

It's on a little elastic string rather than a true lanyard. I've heard they tend to break, which makes the badges tragically easy to lose. But it also has a clip (like you might expect on a badge you wear to work), so you could simply attach it to your shirt if you don't want to bring a lanyard from home.

phone charger, extra pair of really comfy shoes, 6 spare pairs of socks, business cards if you have them (writing down contact info is a pain), ferret, a good book to read, fire, twice as much booze as you think you need, prophylactics, and any food stuffs that won't go bad and don't require any preparation you can find, ability to survive in a pocket is a plus
