The post on peace bonding made me think...if one has a permit one can openly (or concealed) carry a handgun pretty much anywhere these days in Atlanta (at least, pertaining to the con ( Read more... )

It's like a Private party or a private function. You have to agree to abide with any rules the convention puts out or they can ask you to leave.

Right. They have to let you carry your gun openly, but they don't have to let you attend the con.

no but that can't ban you just for exercising your right to carry..not without a fat lawsuit.

Actually they can. It is a according to the carry laws you can not carry at large public gatherings including churches and sporting events.

According to Wikipedia's listings of gun laws, in Georgia:

Firearm regulations are uniform throughout the state, and a firearms permit is valid throughout the state, in all areas other than in a few specially-defined areas. These specially-defined prohibited areas include:

[I deleted any nonapplicable listings]
* any public gathering (includes, but is not limited to, athletic or sporting events, churches or church functions, political rallies and/or functions, publicly owned or operated buildings)
* any place licensed to sell alcohol for consumption on premises (excluding restaurants that serve alcohol)

Dragon*Con certainly counts as a public gathering and a place that sells alcohol. No real guns, sorry!

no it does not. While the public is 'everywhere'. DragonCon is a PRIVATE gathering because you have to pay to attend. The hotel is a privately owned and operated building.

a sporting event would be a private gathering by your definition also.

yup. Remember this law was written before the recent Supreme Court ruling...limiting control to 'some' government buildings.

You're allowed to carry a weapon with you if you are licensed.

You are not allowed to enter a private building if they tell you not to.

Your right to carry a weapon doesn't override someone's right to tell you not to be in a privately owned building.

THIS.

Well, that was true a month ago. Not anymore, when it pertains to handguns.

I assume you NOT are saying that I can not enter a secure private building without permission, like, you have to have an ID card, well DUH...total non sequitur.

You are wrong. Read the law. The pertinent bits have already been quoted here already and it is as clear as day. The law clarified where you can carry a weapon in PUBLIC areas, not on private property, except where that property is owned by one's employer.

In response to the original post - How is D*C, security and the hotel staff going to deal with ?
Hopefully, by allowing myself and other legally registered CCP holders to carry loaded weapons wherever we wish. But if not, then we will be forced to obey hotel policy.

if Alabama has a reciprocating agreement, then yes, I do believe you can. The open carry has always been 'legal' it has just been 'discouraged'.

The new firearm law went into effect July 1

You can, with limitations. GA law is relatively permissive.

As with any concealed weapon permit, it is good for your state. If you travel outside your state, you should find that the terms of your permit include you checking in with local enforcement to let them know you are traveling with a weapon.

Most people never do this but it is in the terms of the Georgia weapon permit.
