A demon and a butler
A butler to the core
These three statements, whichever one you pick, seem to summarize Sebastian quite perfectly for in a way, one can consider him all these things. Though it was a role placed upon him by the young earl Phantomhive at the moment of their contract, there’s no denying he practically took this costume so to speak and began to wear it as second skin. His actions are seemingly done to a butler’s aesthetics: absolute obedience to his master’s orders, keeping the Phantomhive household running like clockwork, tending to the Earl Phantomhive’s health and wellbeing and upholding the dignity of the Phantomhive name. Sebastian manages most everything in the manor from cooking to cleaning to Ciel’s daily schedule and when the situation calls for, his education. In this vein, we see that he is quick and efficient. There will be no slapdash work while he stands at the helm of the manor. Though he may hold contempt for the staff he hired himself due to their incompetence, it is soon evident he hired them for a different reason: Ciel’s protection. This is something he will do most anything to ensure because after all, were the young earl to die before his contract was fulfilled, that would mean a tasteless and ultimately unsatisfying soul.
For after all, what is Sebastian but a demon under contract? He dons the mask of this perfectly charming gentleman who serves under the Lord Phantomhive for this very reason. That soul is a meal for him; a meal he was promised and wishes to marinade with the finest of spice and seasoning, to savor when the time has finally come. True to his demonic nature, Sebastian can be seen as a seducer if the situation calls for, a being who shows no mercy toward those who irritate him, a creature detached from humanity completely. He shows no concern for life other than Ciel’s and at times perhaps little to no concern for the boy at all, evidenced when he commented on tea becoming cold due to his master being kidnapped. He shows no outward reactions, perhaps only the occasional jab at his master to rile the boy as he does seem to enjoy frustrating him every so often.
Against his adversaries, we can see Sebastian being somewhat ruthless and quite cocky. He shows no hesitation toward killing other human beings and even against those who aren’t human, he holds the same lack of mercy. As long as they get in the way of his master’s will, they are to be eliminated by any means necessary. But of course, violence isn’t the only way. At times, he’s more than willing to use his wiles and his rather silver tongue to get what he wants, mostly information. However, he does show his contempt for humanity. To him, they are nothing more than lesser beings but despite this, he seems to at least be able to respect power when he sees it and can give credit where credit is due. The Indian servant, Agni, is one who had managed to earn the butler’s respect and Sebastian sees him as one of his, if not his only friend. It is from Agni where he learns the importance of keeping his master hale and happy, to look after his well being instead of merely following orders which in turn seems to at least, very slightly, change Sebastian’s approach in caring for his master. Despite this, he can still consider his master an insufferable brat but he follows orders just the same.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Strengths:
-he seems to be able to control fire
-enhanced strength, speed and reflexes
-wit
-charm
-knowledge in various fields
-a great cook
-being able to detect the presence of his master due to their contract
Weaknesses:
-cocky
-operates mostly under his master’s orders, their contract being like a collar to him
-bit of an ego thinly disguised by his comments
[ Other Important Facts ] :
-He loves cats. Absolutely loves cats. He considers them perfect seeing as there weren’t any animals like them where he came from. Upon meeting a cat, he will lose all composure and dignity, fawning over it and playing with its paws until finally dragged away.
-Unfortunately, Ciel is allergic and refuses to let him have any cats.
-This doesn’t stop him. He may be prone to hiding them in closets.
-He also doesn’t sleep. It’s a luxury for him.
