More thoughts and feels on why I'm leaving DC for Marvel

Frankly, I wish that DC would copy Marvel more on what's really working: not 'reboots', just updated origins that fit the times. For example, during Batman:Knightfall, Scarecrow sent a booby-trapped VHS cassette to the police. If this were a Marvel property, should a writer need to refer back to that storyline today, the cassette would be retconned ( Read more... )

I'm a bit baffled why Marvel keeps renumbering things (this isn't new, btw) but they don't drop their history in doing so. The stories remain linear, even if they update characters or storylines, they never erase what came before. They also tend to have a wonderful continuity with writers. I was very happy to see that Peter David was writing the new X-Factor after a decade or more of writing the previous edition.

I dropped all DC but Swamp Thing and haven't missed them at all, which is really sad. Of course the last time I did this (mid 90s) I ended up having to go back and buy up back issues and trade paperbacks of all the bat books for a decade. I don't see that happening with the New DC. The reason I did it back then was I got addicted to online fandom and writing fanfic and stopped reading comics. This time, DC screwed up by wiping out the history I loved so much.

A DC novel led me to fanfic. Then fanfic literally brought me back to DC after about 10 years away. I'd dropped it during AzBats because... well, there was no internet and I had no seasoned fans I could talk to on message boards who could reassure me that Bruce would be back in the cape before too long. I found Rucka's NML novelization, read it, loved it, and started Googling to find out what happened in Knightfall after I quit. And one of the hits was a link to Dannell Lites' "The Chair". I read it, I was hooked, and at first I thought that maybe these were some sort of 'official online novels. Kinda like Star Trek/Star Wars novels'. I went looking for more and eventually figured out what was going on... but not before I'd read Batfics about the fallout from Tower of Babel, more Dannell fics, Sylfics, etc. I wanted to fill in the gaps, so I went back and tackled the back issue bins ( ... )
