they did that in the old days too cuz they never knew if the people were actually dead or not .. thats were the saying "saved by the bell" comes from. :)

The scratches on the insides of caskets is also believed to be (at least, in part) the origin of the myth of vampires, since people thought that the people in the caskets must be waking up at night and trying to escape. The blood on the poor buried peoples' clothing (from scratching their fingers raw trying to escape) probably kinda helped the myth along too.
And stuff like that may be gory, but it's still kinda cool. ^_^
