Time to be honest. I really didn't see that Cole was a demon coming, despite the fact that it's foreshadowed so heavily. Not just foreshadowed, it's outright said by Lambert, but he was so focused on using Cole as a scapegoat that I discredited him. Add in what we saw from Cole in the Fade and I didn't see it coming, I really didn't.
One day I want to be able to write something where I tell the reader (or players if I'm running a game) the truth, flat out to their face, and have them not believe it. Maybe it was just me, but that was very well done.
While we were re-reading it I kept noticing that they'd come across spirits or demons and Cole would mention that he couldn't sense them like he thought he should. And then he'd turn around and say that Cole wasn't a demon because "he would have sensed it." Man I don't know how I didn't see that before.
Some more srs talk. I buy that Cole forgot that he was a demon which explains all the stuff we see from his perspective. But once we're in the Fade, the only change that seemed to happen was that everyone could see him and provided a temporary immunity to his powers.
Add in what happened during his nightmare. The other demon didn't seem to notice that Cole wasn't mortal, was Cole's true identity buried so deep that even other demons in the Fade were buying it? That would pose some interesting questions about the nature of spirits, or at the very least the nature of Cole.
Or was the other Demon perfectly aware of what was going on and just playing the part, for reasons we may never get to know?

NEXT WEEK IS THE FINAL CHAPTER
Chapter 22 is the last chapter, and the Epilogue is like two pages so I'm going to go ahead and fold it into Chapter 22.
Would people be interested in having a final, summary post put up on February 24th to discuss the book as a whole and/or all the books?
It's a long way until April and Masked Empire.
