Mass Effect spoilers

Oct 30, 2013 16:56

Okay, I'm sorry to ask this, but it keeps coming up.

Please, everyone, please can you not post Mass Effect spoilers in here? I haven't been able to play that trilogy yet, and I really want to, and I don't want to know anything about what happens beforehand. But I keep running across spoilers in here that are mentioned by people comparing ME to DA ( Read more... )

I've chimed in my opinion on another thread where this came up, but as someone who was in the DA fandom for years before ever touching Mass Effect, I agree with this request.

Yes, Mass Effect 1 has been out for six years now and ME3 for over a year and a half, but this is a community for Dragon Age, not Mass Effect. It'd be cool if people could at least be aware and respectful of this (and, heck, other story-intensive RPGs, too, for that matter, it's just that ME and DA seem to be linked inextricably as fraternal twins in ways other games aren't. And it's been pretty clear with DA2 that even where the two games are superficially similar, they're different in the details).

I've certainly seen references to things as spoiler-y for DA in the threads as anything I've seen for the whole ME trilogy... Is it a call to be more diligent about spoilers as a whole?

As I said in email, but I'll repeat here so it's public...

The games have been out a while, yeah, and a lot of details are common internet knowledge (characters, who comes back in the later games, the fact that everyone in the world hates the ending to MA3). But I keep seeing plot-related spoilers about missions, and that's more sad.

But yeah, overall, I guess just a "Please be aware some people in here haven't been able to play this game yet and want to".

Since this is a Dragon Age community, there's an expectation that people have played those games if they're here.

Since DA2 has been out for more than two years now, I personally don't really expect that Dragon Age spoilers are going to be warned for. If you're on a DA comm, you have to expect to see DA spoilers.

But you don't expect to come in here and see spoilers for, say, Last of Us or Bioshock Infinite (to name a couple of more recent games that have been out for a few months, and boy howdy would I be pissed if there were Last of Us spoilers here because I do intend to play that game and I've heard the ending is a deusey :).

Yes, but I'm pretty sure I saw a few spoilers for older games (Skyrim) in another post. We also aren't talking about major spoilers (i.e., what happens in major missions, who the major enemies are, what happens to what species and how) but rather much smaller spoilers. As you said, they are sort of fraternal twins. The anger over the ME3 ending was a big part of why the DA2 expansion pack was cancelled. The two are related, clearly, so in a period of speculation, they are relevant pieces of evidence. I don't think saying things like, "I hope the riding mechanic in DA3 is easier than the Mako" is a significant spoiler for a game that is 6 years old, nor is it irrelevant to the community.

Are we still hiding DAO and DA2 spoilers?

Hmm, true, I guess. And the games have been out a long time. *sigh* Possibly I should just suck it up.

Sweet, we can spoil other games!

The Princess is in another castle

Mwahahahahahaha!

Is there any particular reason you haven't played Mass Effect yet?

NOOOOOOOOOO NOT ANOTHER CASTLE!!! *sob* Next you'll tell me that Link saves Zelda at the end of his latest! HOW DARE YOU! ;)

Got pregnant, baby ate my life. I spend insane amounts of time playing my Nintendo DS in ten-minute increments here there and everywhere, but console games are harder to do because I don't usually have the stretches of time they demand (and when I do, they're allocated for things like trying to clean the house). I miss my PS3! Also I thought (mistakenly) that they were just shoot-em-ups, until around when ME3 came out and I learned better.

Being as I'm the one that sparked this, I am sorry that you were spoiled, but that being said, in general, my opinions about spoilers on communities that aren't devoted to them aren't that unusual I hope.

New Game = All spoilers warned for, no exceptions for how minor

Game has been out for a year or more = Major story/character spoilers should still be under wraps, but things that have no bearing on the plot should be allowed to roam free.
