Really I can't talk because I live in one of the more temperate parts of Canada (we're not nearly as obnoxiously mild as, say, Victoria, but it still doesn't tend to get as cold here as it does in most of the country) but... you guys, do you seriously not get snow in England, like, ever? (Actually, according to the Beeb it's more snow than I ( Read more... )

Depends which part of England.

Liverpool used to get snow often when I was younger, but it's pittered out in the past few years. Like a dusting and then gone, or not sticking. Even then obviously we never got SNOW like say Scotland, you guys or the the poles.

It's coming down thick and starting to stick now, which hasn't happened for a good many years (unless it happened when I was bedbound and thus did not care..)

I don't get snow ever. When I want to see snow, I have to drive about two hours into the mountains. Can you spare me a trip and send me some snow? California's been dangerously short on snow lately even in the mountains (severe drought), so I'm sure the entire state would appreciate it if you'd share your snow with us.

Only if you promise to take some of the ice too!

I will accept ice. Does it have to be on the roads, though? Nobody here has a clue about how to drive on ice. They have trouble enough just driving in rain.

In the south west we might get an hour's worth of dusting a year - everywhere else gets a lot more, when they do. It only started snowing here at about 3:30pm and has actually stuck for once. It'll probably be gone by tomorrow.

We don't tend to get very much very often. It probably snows every year but it rarely amounts to much and hardly ever settles. It's probably been at least ten years since I've seen this much snow - and I don't ever recall seeing London get so much.

Everyone laughs at us for flapping about uselessly because of snow that Canada would laugh at, but when you only get this kind of snow once every ten years or so it's just not worth investing in the kind of infrastructure required to cope with it. We don't have the snowploughs, people don't have snowchains, the trains don't have the right kind of rails - and people don't have the experience of driving in this kind of weather. It is silly and we do look ridiculous, I guess - but when you're not used to it you're not used to it!

Oh no, I definitely understand that. I'm just a bit taken aback because I never realised that your winters were so dramatically different from ours!

That's the Gulf Stream for you. With our latitude we should be as cold as parts of northern Canada, but it keeps us a lot warmer. With global warming it could end up being disrupted, which means we might actually get colder whilst the rest of the world gets warmer! Go figure.
