It's Poll-y Poll-y time!!

I am toying with the idea of doing intro to pet massage talks at local facilities. It would last about an hour and would cover the origins/definition of massage, what's involved in a pet massage and the benefits thereof. If I do them, I'd like to charge for admission. I'd like to see what your opinions are on a price.

Caveat: I am not the sort to dote on pets or spend exorbitant amounts of money pampering them. Perhaps to some who idolize their companion animals more, it'd be a reasonable cost.

It's not that I'm against companion animals in any way; I just think that there are a lot of things that Americans spend too much money on. I'm old-fashioned that way. :-)

That's cool. The pet industry is somewhere like a 4 million dollar industry. I tell people that I want to talk to the people that put rhinestone collars on their dogs and tote them around in a Prada bag. :-)

We have a Pug meetup every 2 weeks (Saturdays) at the Reston Dog park. Check meetup.com and see what other meetups there are. It might just be a good place to come and chatt about doggie massage.

I don't expect people would want to pay for what is basically an hour-long ad for your services - people may come for free or if you offer coupons for money off of their first massage or something.

I agree with this. i would use it as a means of getting yourself out there and letting people know who u are. I think handing out cuponds is a GREAT idea

Don't get me wrong, I find it very interesting, but not having pets at the moment, it's relevance and usefulness is limited. Combine that with my tight budget and I probably wouldn't, but not because it's not worth it.

Would the people be able to bring their dogs? Maybe you could give them a very general "move" they can do on their dog. Or let them put all the pet names in a 'hat' and you could pick one to demonstrate on during the talk.

And I'm going to hush now :p

ps I should have introduced myself since I added you without permission. I'm Sandra, newly certified Canine and Equine Massage Therapist in Canada. Hi! :)

Hello there!

I have learned that people bringing their dogs is a bad idea. For the intro talk it would be more about massage itself, highlighting the strokes and talking about the benefits. In the clinic I do, I actually teach people how to massage their own dogs where I have one dog present (the one I work on). When people bring their own - they are more focused on making sure that their dog is behaving. For the clinic I have more handouts and am more in depth on how to perform the strokes.
