Years later, I was at a con with Chip when a young man asked him a question. That young man, gay and black, as Chip is, had just attended a writing workshop where he'd found it very difficult to get recognition about why the things he was writing about were important. ...Man, it's the overrode that really hits home here.

I do have sympathy for people who are really new to the whole prejudice/privilege discussion feeling, "but it's better if I don't see it, right?" Without the necessary background in the discussion, it makes sense to feel that way. ...But jumping in to override someone who's saying they have a concern, by going, "well, that's not a concern I have, so it's no big deal, right?"... oogh.

Which I think makes this quote a particularly clear illustration of where all the problems with privilege combine.

Yeah. For e, it's the "overrode" and the "I don't make it a problem. Which... at best, it's saying "I refuse responsibility for this, so I refuse to consider how I interact with it!" At worst, it says "You're the one causing this by bringing up the issue. Why can't you just shut up?"

Which... ehng.
