I hate to bring this all up again, but I think one of the reasons I like slash fic better than good buddies fic is that it makes all the emotions more intense. At least, in my way of thinking, probably not in yours.

I guess it all boils down to personal feelings and reactions. I'm one of those people who can't love everyone equally, so most of my characters are the same. (That doesn't make my way better or right, of course. And I totally respect the "just friends" thing -- and I do agree with you about Jack and Daniel. It's just something I thought of while reading your post.)

(And having said that, I think it'd be hilarious and awesome if you wrote a fic where everyone but Jack and Daniel think they're in love with each other and only Jack understands that. Good character study, I think, to see how everyone'd react. ^^)

And I say, in the most positive, friendly, life-affirming way, that that's crap ^_^. I think it's a matter of a different set of emotions being delt with, which can be more volatile, but emotional intensity neither requires nor precludes romance. I'd throw examples at you, but they have end-season-five spoilers. Or... hey, non-SG1 examples work, too. Squall and Seifer? In some ways (not in all interpretations), slashing them would have a moderating effect on their behaviour. The two Adamas (BSG) have a familial relationship that's every bit as intense as a romance. McKay manages to get into intense relationships with just about everyone, because that's the kind of guy he is. Through the first season at least, no romance for him. (Well, when it makes noises about happening, he gets all awkward and winds up tripping over himself to the nth degree ( ... )

Er, okay. I concede your point, although I think I possibly didn't say what I intended very well. And I have more to say, except I have to leave now, so.

ALSO BY HILARIOUS I MEANT I would find it incredibly funny to hear Jack be awkward and annoyed while trying to not let Daniel know that some people thought they were GAF. Although there could definitely be a dramatic darkfic if you wrote it that way, I was just, you know, suddenly imagining a slightly-humorous-but-still-character-centric fic.

You know, if she doesn't show up, people are going to think *we're*.... draegonhawke September 12 2006, 00:25:51 UTC
Well, you could have told me the correct phrasing before I typed up a giant rant and had to edit it for length just to get it to post.

Still, I think the major point of writing such a fic would be to showcase the very serious issues that are still faced in the Armed Forces, and as such the obective wouldn't be to be humourous. I mean, you could write it that way, but the function (or at least execution) of the fic would change accordingly..

Even though I've never watched Stargate, I still think that the fic the magibrain's pestering you about sounds like it could be really interesting.

It always confuses me when Stargate fans mention General Hammond, because my brain always goes 'RICHARD HAMMOND?' and by the time I realise it's not him it's too late, my mind is already full of exploding caravans in space.

It gets better when you realize that General Hammond is this huge guy, whereas Richard Hammond is... a microbe.
