What in all seven levels of Dante's hell is cyclobutane-1,2,-dicarboxylic acid? @_@ *splutters* Why is there a compound in the front bit? Why doesn't the back bit end with -oic acid if it's a carboxylic acid? How can you have a 1,2 smack in front of the basic functional group? X_X Dammit, how can you attach COOH to a cyclic compound and vice versa ( Read more... )

It's a cyclic butane, right? That is, an alkane? saturated bonds? In cyclic form, each C attaches to each other and to 2 H atoms , one above one below. Replace 1 H atom with a COOH group on the 1 carbon and the 2 carbon, and I think you get the compound with that name. If I remember the naming system correctly the cyclobutane is the key compound, the -COOH groups are attached to it.

In other words, it's a cyclic alkane with 2 -COOH groups attached.

The other series that I've pimped a lot and no one seems to pick up is the Bartimaeus trilogy.

Nonsense! Not only have I read two-thirds and am eagerly waiting for the last book to come out in paperback (on which occasion I may buy them all), I have converted a Murdoch friend to the trilogy. She's read 'em all. ;)
