Mami Wata, Magical Circle, and those fluffies

I have just finished a research paper on Mami Wata for the Magical Circle. While I've learned a lot about her, there's one thing that was just making me angry all the time. Almost every site that has more information on Mami Wata (and some actually lloked good to me) tries to connect her with ancient Egyptian Isis. I'm not disputing the connection ( Read more... )

If you really actively want to fight, we have communities such as dot_bunnyhunt for a reason. ;) BTW, wikipedia *can* be edited by anyone. So you *can* actually go in and delete or edit any obviously false information. Usually text on Wikipedia is directly lifted from other websites, so you won't be doing much harm.

P.S. Your post is a perfect example of why I HATE Wikipedia as a general rule. It's okay if you're willing to accept that everything you're reading could be completely wrong, but way too many people take it as well-researched gospel.

I still check it because it gives me the basic keywords for where to look on. Some articles are actually good, but yep, you run into crap. Unfortunately, you find that in printed books as well and while many people do doubt the internet (knowing they can post whatever and claim whatever on the internet - remember the bunch of 15-yrs old High Priestesses of *oh I don't know which trad I'm a HPS of* on wiccan?), but believe all actual books are well-researched material. They're NOT. I've seen books far worse than the internet.

I do, after constantly running into stuff like this - I have to do most of my research for the Magical Circle via the internet, b/c I have to order pagan books over Amazon and it's EXPENSIVE and we university scholars are poor folk.
I was thinking of editing Wikipedia, but I've seen the argument around this article ... I don't know if it can help. I guess I can at least kind of add a comment on the Isis thing, because that's ridiculous.
*I'm off to dot_bunnyhunt*

Mami Wata is an Ancient African Religion anonymous September 17 2008, 14:04:23 UTC
Had it ever occurred to you that it is YOU who is the “fluff bunny?” The Wikipedia article was written by an initiated high priestess with ancestral roots in the religion.
If you had read her book “Mami Wata: Africa’s Ancient God/dess Unveiled,” you would learn that the author not only knows her history and the tradition, she cites her references in great detail. She initiates people to Mami Wata and knows her stuff. In her book she states that the ancient Mesopotamians were African and carried Mami’s worship there from ancient Egypt. The so-called invented “pagan Mami Wata” faith you are practicing is little-more than another western-style hodgepodge of euro-remnants posing as legitimate faiths that have obscured and basdardized the ancient religions of Africa. I have learned that your kind as you arrogantly appropriate the religions of others, show little respect for is legitimate clergy. .What a pity.

Sorry to disappoint you, Anonymous, but I've got a PhD in Egyptology so I *know* what I am talking about. I am not attacking anyone's beliefs, just claims about a dscipline they have clearly no clue about.
