Harry sat in their kitchen - no, his kitchen - remembering all the promises that he and Draco had made to each other. Promises they had made not so very long ago. Promises now broken.
A promise to love each other forever.
A promise to not let family or friends interfere.
A promise to be each other’s family.
A promise to always be there to help each other through tough times.
A promise to never leave. To never EVER leave.
As he looked out the back at the now-melting snowmen, Harry’s tears flowed. What the hell good are promises anyway?
=========================================
Draco was at Malfoy Manor, empty inside. Family values, family honour, duty-bound. Those were the words his parents used when he had finally told them about Harry. Harry had insisted that he tell his parents everything - start the new year off fresh - come clean. He had made Draco promise. He didn’t want to live a lie, and he had thought Draco loved him. Why, then, was he determined to hide that love? Draco had kept that promise.
And now he lay here, staring up at the ceiling, thinking of other promises. Promises broken. Now he was broken too.

One week later, the owl came. Harry tried to ignore it, but it was insistent. He recognized the eagle owl as Draco’s, but he couldn’t bring himself to hope. He was crushed, a mere shell of his former self. Why had he let his guard down? Why had he fallen in love? Why was it that he just couldn’t accept that he was destined to be alone. There wasn’t much else to be said.
Reluctantly, he opened the window and let the owl inside. He opened the envelope to find a ring. The accompanying note had two words: “promise me?”
