Phantasy Star IV: Exterminating Your Basement Monsters

Sep 20, 2008 15:08

HELLODERE 8D
Today I'll be traveling to the town of Carmona, where I will see an old roman necropolis.

But in this post, you'll be seeing the game's first dungeon, which is actually fairly short and easy.
I feel it serves more as a way for you to get familiar with the battle system before you face really hard enemies later and really LONG and COMPLICATED dungeons too.

And since I'm still fairly new at this, and totally inexperienced with livejournal, formatting advice of any kind would be greatly appreciated.
LIKE, I MIGHT RESIZE THE IMAGES IN THE FUTURE TO 75% JUST 'CAUSE THAT MIGHT BE LESS SCREEN-STRETCHY
But that's more of an aesthetic choice. Dropping it to 50% makes the text hard to read on my screen, but my resolution is something like 1680 by 1050 pixels so IT TENDS TO SHRINK THINGS DOWN QUITE A BIT.

If you're looking for old adventures, check here.

When we left off, we were about to enter the basement of the Academy to investigate what the principal had warned us about.

The stairs that Hahn so ferociously blocked earlier. LET'S SEE WHERE THEY GO

Welcome to our first dungeon! It's very small and doesn't take long to get through.
This song plays as you enter and go through. Same song for most cave-like levels.

:O IS THAT A MONSTER?

It runs away as you approach. Now let's check that check we saw earlier

SUDDENLY, WITH A HORIZONTAL WIPE (i couldn't cap it IT GOES SO FAST D:)-

Our first battle! Meet them Head-on! Is the battle tune. I LIKE THE SUDDEN START
Enemy name in the top corner. A motion sprite from PSCaves:

Actually this is the more difficult enemy in the basement, interestingly enough oO But it's still easy.
And along with that,,

The battle menu! I think initially I was just using the macro I set earlier, so you'll see the command menu later.
Those questions marks show whatever command choice you input for the character

Here, they're all set to attack. Alys readies her boomerang..

The boomerang flies accross the screen and strikes both enemies for decent damage

ZAP

Victory! And every victory needs a Victory Tune!

These guys are Xanafalgue, and they're the main enemy in this dungeon. They're really easy to beat, and jiggle like this:

Creepy.

HERE YOU CAN SEE CHAZ SLASHING WITH HIS KNIVES

And Hahn finishes up the dirty work

They offer less exp, but they're still good to kill.

EXCUSES

YAY MONEES

:3

The Xanafalgue attack with their tentacle-y things

WHOO

Hmm, another floor

AGH, THREE OF THEM?
Also here you can see the command screen.
Sword is attack, sparkles for Tech, red flash for skill, treasure chest for item, and shield for defend.
Everyone has a unique set of skills and techs, with some overlap in things like Res and such.

ANOTHER HUZZAH!

I don't know why this is here, there's no risk of poison at all in this dungeon

Also, upon defeating an enemy, it dissolves like so. IT TOOK ME FOREVER TO GET THIS SHOT

MORE STAIRS? LET'S GO

:O

PARTNERS THING ALIKE

way to state the obvi-WHAT THE HELL IS THAT UP THERE
In my mania, I left and ran around until Chaz and Hahn leveled up once more.

I do believe that is a water-based Tech
Also I'll stop doing this, but I wanted to demonstrate the level ups here. I do believe growth is set and not randomized, so
there's no point in resetting in hopes of getting a better level up.

Anyways, I went to heal then came back

And this is what retreating looks like

ALRIGHT SMALL GREEN FLOWER POT GREMLIN BRAIN, I'M READY FOR YOU

Igglanova is more of a miniboss than anything.

It only has two attacks: Fission, and a regular attack where it sprays red bits at one of your party members. However, it'll always
do fission until it has two helpers at its side, and it will not attack if it uses fission. This makes it a very easy boss fight, and
one that you can easily abuse to gain a lot of experience early on.
However, whenever you face bosses, this ditty plays. I feel like the regular battle music is more alarming

I chose to start by setting up support techs. Saner for Agility

Gelun to decrease his attack.

Shift to increase attack. Unfortunately it only targets one person at a time
I might be calling it Shifta because that's what it was in PSO so I APOLOGIZE FOR THAT MISTAKE AHEAD OF TIME

I allowed it to get an attack in so I could screencap it for you.

Anyways, since Chaz was missing every fourth or fifth attack, I suddenly remembered this skill, and chose to apply it.

TAKE THAT!

This is actually an insane amount of exp and meseta for this guy. I decided to just whack at what he spawned for about
half an hour while I chatted with a friend.
Thus, massive experience.

Alys keeps her priorities straight.

you can see i'm getting a little screencap-happy around here -_-;

TO THE PRINCIPAL!

Monsters however keep appearing in the basement if you're interested in more fighting, though.

The Hunters: Making people feel safe and happy 8D

Alys: I'MA CUT YOU
Let's see what the principal has to say on this basement matter.

She's getting serious :O

So what are the first five?

I CALL MYSELF ZIO
BUT MY REAL NAME IS BILLY BOB JOHNS

So it really is Billy Bob Johns?

If you can't tell, this is sort of a flashback.
Zio didn't just randomly appear in grayscale to our party.

If you come into my birth valley, I'll turn you to stone ;)

These are not the droids you are looking for

THIS LACK OF TRANSITIONS
DID HAHN INFILTRATE THE FLASHBACK?

No I guess we're back to present day

Sandworms aren't too back, actually.
But they have a nifty thing they do, which I'll show you when we meet them

You know if Hahn is with the party, I don't see why his money isn't just automatically added to our funds from the get go.
Although this makes things more interesting, i guess

Principal: Because, you know, I'm real busy here.

IT SOUNDS SO... RELIGIOUS >(

Smart townsfolk.

IS THAT WHY YOU'RE IN THE GARDEN

That's a farm?
Pretty lame farm.

Because the geology department shares the farm with the agricultural department
Or what

Using the Inn just gets a fade-out as you restore.
Always good to rest up before an adventure!

Now the guards don't block your path, so you can freely leave town.

And it's the overworld!
You can see that the city icon vaguely resembles what it actually looks like.

And that ends our first installment!
Or it would have been the first, if Livejournal didn't get all huffy at me for 528 screencaps >|
It'll be a while before I have the next one up, as I'd like to work ahead and with this one my goal was moreso to get it out of the way.
So, what exactly are our heroes going to find on their way to the Valley?
Tune in next time to find out! 8D
