Phantasy Star IV: Now starting the End of the Millennium

Sep 19, 2008 21:04

HAY THERE :B

Welcome to my first Screencap Adventure post!
INSPIRED BY THE GREAT AND ILLUSTRIOUS Zarla, a very old friend from an epoch long ago, I've been debating on and off for a long while as to whether or not I should do one of these.
However, it sounds like great and awesome fun, so why not just go for it?
All entries shall be cataloged here for future reference.

Let's start with some background.
The Phantasy Star series is one of the first major RPGs that appeared for the Sega Master System and later continued on the Genesis. Turn based fighting, leveling up, all those basic concepts also appeared on this less well known series.
I actually got into the series after playing Phantasy Star Online for the Gamecube in singleplayer-offline mode. I went through the game, did the quests in the hunter's guild, and learned about the plot of the series. It was fun, if a little tedious. However, this was probably the first game to really strike me with its music. Before then, I was a gamer for the sake of just playing games. I never felt much of a tie or a connection to any single aspect.
But PSO showed me concretely the artistic and emotional influences a game could have, with plot, with character development, and most of all, with the music that it employs. I was surprised, to say the least. However, it'd still be a few years before I really began to connect with the medium that is Video Game.

When the Phantasy Star Collection was released for the Gameboy Advanced, I picked up and played through the first Phantasy Star. This really old RPG for the Sega Master System had its protagonist as Alis Landale, a girl who loses her brother to the corrupt government and policeforce and then randomly goes on a quest to avenge him? She's featured on the title screen.

The premise was stupid, but it did a lot to set up the story in future games. Also it had a penchant for labyrinthian dungeons that look like that old windows screensaver with the maze? SUCH A PAIN ARGH especially when they introduced invisible doors in the later dungeons XP
Also interesting is that in this game, the final boss isn't REALLY the final boss, but some nightmare-fuel-inducing monster who I'll introduce later, as he/she/it is a central figure in the entire series.

After that came Phantasy Star II, which became significantly more serious and dark, but was still really interesting. The game takes place 1000 years after PSI, but I haven't managed to finish it because of the insane grinding necessary to competently get through a dungeon without significant losses.
However, intruiged by the whole Phantasy Star story, I've had the plot fairly spoiled for me, SO I can at least comment on most things BUT I SHALL MARK THEM AS SPOILERS. PSII sets up a lot of what happens in PSIV.

Phantasy Star III diverges a bit from the PS storyline, but it does something else really interesting. But I can't say much without spoiling part of PSII, so for now I'll just say play it yourself :P

Phantasy Star IV is probably the best game of the quadrilogy, marking the end of the series in its current form. Taking place another 1000 years after PSII, it refers back to the first two games a lot, and has nice little tie ins everywhere. While the path is fairly linear, there's a lot to explore, and sidequests end up more as a nice parallel to the plot than anything. Released in 1994, towards the end of this console generation's life, it is not as well known as it should be. However, it manages to set up a fair amount of precedents and tropes intrinsic to the RPG Genre, even before Final Fantasy, for example.
And the reason I chose this game is because I haven't finished it either, but I got more than halfway through it. Hopefully with motivation from an obligation, I'll actually get through it this time 8D

To play the game, I'm using the latest version of Kega emulator called Fusion, which you can find here. IT'S COMPATIBLE WITH MOST OLD SEGA CONSOLES 8D
Shots are taken with shift+f12, however, it has a penchant of marking your latest action in the emulator in the bottom right corner. Thus, some of my shots will be inundated with BMP SAVED and so for future adventures I'll try to be more patient and space out the time I take to hit the cap button.
As for the ROM, the fellows at PSCave.com have a delightful download page with ROMS and patches for different languages for most of the series.

I messed with the settings to maximize the image quality, admittedly.
Sound in the emulator is set to 44100Hz
Scanlines at 0%
Fixed Aspect is turned on
And Brighten is turned on.
Filtered was turned on by default but that makes the image blurry so OFF YOU GO
Anyways, with all that, LET'S BEGIN!

Ah Sega, my first console.
Interestingly enough, this is one of the few instances I've witnessed where the Sega fanfare doesn't
play. Instead, this song, appropriately titled End of the Millennium kicks in and keeps up until we start the game.
KIND OF INTENSE

IT'S SPACE

The text here fades in and out

...what the hell does that even mean

The title screen!
However, a bit of backstory is always helpful,
so let's not hit start just yet.

PEACE

Terminator?

Not the amazon furries! No!

AND THE CROSSHATCH OF CHARACTERS IS COMPLETE.
However these four are not the only ones we'll meet in our journey.

Space backdrop, followed by a lengthy set of scrolling text to explain the background of the game!

FROM METROID?

This basically is a quickie summary of events from Phantasy Star II that will impact the plot here.
How, you ask? YOU'LL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE.

So let's begin!

OH GOD I STEPPED INTO A POKEMON GAME DIDN'T I

So our protagonist awakens fully dressed. At this point you don't have control over the character, so let's just watch.

In my eagerness to capture Chaz walking, I discovered the annoying thing about taking caps too quickly
with Fusion, which you can see there at the bottom right. HOPEFULLY THIS ISN'T TOO RETARDING.

Wait who are you where are you taking me what do you mean partner

All these towns appear in PSI and/or PSII, mind you. But it's been so long since I've played, I don't remember if they
keep the look of the town consistent throughout the games. Oh well, the gap between each of these is a millenium anyway.

Bit of background: Chaz and currently unnamed mystery woman are Hunters, mercenaries of sorts that are
payed to defeat monsters and such, or perform various tasks. I think this is the origin of the Hunter concept in Phantasy Star Online.

This entire thing is automated, with you being dragged around town by your partner. NO AUTONOMOUS INTRO SEQUENCE FOR YOU!

"Screw you for having an interest in learning! I'M LEAVING!"
Also welcome to our overworld. STILL AUTOMATED

INTRIGUE as they look at the sunseeet
Or sunrise
whichever

Where are we now and how long did we ride
Also seems our female partner's name is Alys :O

Finally, you have control over Chaz!
Old genesis controllers had a very easy ABC set up.
A will open the menu,
C will let you interact with objects or confirm things (like A),
and B cancels out of things.
So what's the first thing we do in an RPG? Talk to people!

WHY YES, YES I AM

oops, hit C when there was nothing there

Messy academiacs :/

Monsters? In a basement?
Pssh naaww

Hay look there's the woman who treats me like her bitch
I mean WASN'T THERE SOMEONE ELSE TO TALK TO FIRST?

yes

yes

why do people hate me :<

And how am I expected to handle basement monsters when I can't handle this math book?

Unlike many RPGs, we will not be learning how to pick locks in this one.

Now you're controlling Chaz and Alys.
Seems like a good time to introduce the menu

Which comes up by hitting A.
That's what I like about this game, it accounts for the experience certain characters ought to have at different points.

Nothing in our inventory yet

Tech is the series' version of magic attacks, in a way of speaking. I think it was established in PSII, but humans aren't
able to use magic, so to compensate for this they developped Techniques, which range from offensive to defensive and
support techs. All humans can learn techs, I believe, and many can only be used in battle. They also deplete the TP of the user.

However, this healing technique can be used both in and out of battle

Skills work similarly, but they have a base set of uses that increases as you level up, and gets reset when you are healed
in an inn or somesuch.

And nope, no out of battle skills yet.

Equips! Any items you hold that can be applied to a character get attached on this screen. Head-thing, body-thing, and two
arm-things. This means you can double wield, which lets that character attack twice in that turn. That, or you can equip a
shield, but unless the character is a pure tech/skill person, I much prefer maximizing the carnage.
Here, we see Alys is a boomerang user, AND SHE'S GOT ROOM FOR ONE MORE!

Here, Chaz is demonstrating this whole double-wield concept.

The status screen shows more detailed into about a character.

Namely, a character icon, their age, class, and stats.
OH ALYS, WHY MUST YOU KEEP YOUR AGE A SECRET

Wow, Chaz really is a youngin'

And here's what Alys says when you mis-examine with her.

The last option of the menu that's significant right now is the Talk option.
It serves as a quick reminder for what you should do next to progress the plot, and some of the conversations are amusing.

Well that answers that.

:O

Oh Alys, I love how you're so blunt and apathetic.

Smallest chem lab EVER

I CAN TOTALLY SEE URANUS THROUGH THIS hurr hurr

Actually, the names change due to character limits in each of the games, but the original three planets were Motavia,
Dezolis, and Palmacosta. Each had a unique environment, being Desert, Icy, and Green-foresty, respectively. But in
PSII, you start off in a Motavia covered in biospheres that make the environment very similar to that of Palmacosta. Thus,
the Great Collapse also marks the decline of the climate control on Motavia. More on this later.

WILL WE BE TRAVELLING THROUGH SPACE? Y/N

Dear Diary
Today Pluto ceased to be a planet. I'm so sad.

Woop, forgot to cap going down the stairs.

That means from the first game! Funny, don't remember him.

It's hard to tell in this shot, but that guy is pacing back and forth fairly rapidly.

HOWEVER, he had an icon! Is he an important character..?

Anyways there's more NPCs but first let's talk to this principal dude

Office! BUT WAIT IN THE BACK THERE ARE BOOKS

So much more interesting than principals

rats.

Kay let's talk to this principal dude

This is how cutscenes work in the game. They're pieces of dialogue with images that correspond to them. Nothing too
flashy, but they do the job well.

WE DON'T BELIEVE IN MARRAIGE SO WE'RE SIMPLY LIFE-PARTNERS

*porn music*

Ew, that looks like a lungsac grew legs and tentacles
EVIL ALVEOLI

Appear where again I thought you said they were in the basement

That seems like an excessive "no"

What how dare a principal of an istitution of learning say that
Blasphemy D:

psh you suck sir

Since I forgot about it earlier, a quick explanation of Macros

They're battle presets so you don't have to scroll through each option for each character.
The disadvantage to automating battle like this is that you can't choose your targets.
Also, the characters will act in the order listed. Right now, Chaz is set to attack before Alys..

But since Alys is faster, it's probably better to put her first. All better!

Now, back to this guy

I HAVE TO SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE OUTSIDE OF THIS VALLEY

That's a compelling reason.

Really because Birth Valley just sounds like some euphemism for a vagina.

Friggen opportunist.

However, Alys knows just how to handle him.

It's like prostitution!

And with that, we're 100 mesetas richer, and we've got a new party member!

Hahn is a scholar, a fair bit older than Chaz. Fairly weak stats, but he learns plenty of support tech and skills.

At this point I noticed hitting C brought up the tech screen. Gelun decreases the attack of certain enemies by the caster's
mental stat

And the skill Vision increases dexterity, which makes attacks more accurate and increases the critical hit rate.

Chaz hasn't got many techs yet

And Earth is a fairly useless tech that MAY put an enemy to sleep.

Alys has some nice techs. Foi is a weak fire attack, Shift increases the attack of a single character, and Saner increases
everyone's agility.

Meanwhile, vortex is a boosted basic attack that targets one enemy, while her regular attack normally hits all enemies

Hahn's sarcasm is also something I appreciate.

This is how we should respond to this whole global warming thing.

:O I'm surprised it wasn't destroyed with the planet

You'd think they were secretly space pirates if all you knew about a Mother Brain was from Metroid

I don't know many professors who would just ramble at whoever came up to them
"YOU! So the thing about free radicals..."

THIS GAME BROUGHT TO YOU BY AL GORE

Alys: *pulls out the strap-on* :3

Alys: You're no fun :<

Let's see who's in town

COULD THIS BE RELATED TO OUR MONSTER PROBLEM?

No RPG is complete without a host of problems elsewhere in the world

YOU RABBLEROUSERS

So I tried to take a dip.

BUT THIS IS ALL THAT HAPPENED >|

Hmm..

ARGH
One of the few RPGs where the idea of robbing a person's home as they stand there does not apply.

THEY GOT WATER EVERYWHERE

Crazed Housewife suspected in murder of fountain-hopping college students, more at 11

These guards step in your way if you try to leave the town.

Pretty effectively blocked in

The one with the drought?

We actually have at least one of these on my campus

That's... pretty warm, I'd say. Not bad for a desert land though

The tool shop!

I can't remember if there is ever a point you actually do get mail though oO

But wait your sprite has yellow hair

The basic healing item.
We won't bother buying it now though

And next to the tool shop is the inn!

5 Meseta per person. Had I come here without Hahn yet, they would've charged me 10 meseta. But no need to rest now!

WELL SO-RRY Let me tune Alys back to bitch-mode see how you like that

The report student just runs around in circles in the room. It's kinda fun to watch, in truth

MAYBE HE SHOULD HIT THE LIBRARY

Hmm. I'm sensing a pattern

I wish I had a light schedule :<

Blue blue.. blue blue..

WILL WE FIND HER? Y/N

It is a pattern then.

wtf what are you doing

...

WELL ENOUGH OF THAT
LET'S CHECK OUT THAT BASEMENT!

At this point however, Livejournal decided my post was far too long, and so for the sake of being able to make this post, I shall postpone the basement, just for a moment.
Tune in next time when we uncover the mystery behind the Monsters from the Motavian Academy basement!
