John doesn’t really sleep well. Sometimes he’ll lie there for hours, looking to be fast asleep, except his eyes fly open at every tiny noise, and there’s no trace of grogginess there. Sometimes he’ll be almost unconscious, as if nothing could wake him, and he always looks more tired for it than before he went to bed. Sometimes he’ll toss and turn and even in his sleep he tries not to cry out, but his face screams of pain and fear and hopelessness.
Bobby never had problems sleeping until he started sharing a room with John.
The nightmares are the worst, always the worst. Seeing John’s fingers claw at the sheets, seeing sweat on his brow and bared teeth as his back arches. Seeing John fight against invisible ghosts that Bobby can’t stop, that Bobby can’t protect him against.
Bobby’s gotten used to crawling into bed beside John, gotten used to ducking the fists and the feet until something in John seems to recognise him and he settles in Bobby’s arms.
Bobby’s gotten used to staying awake, because that always seems to be all he can do, and Bobby’s gotten used to watching the colours of the sunrise play across John’s sleeping face.
