Bobby eats as if every meal is his last. It’s quite a spectacle, watching him pile his plate with so much food it could put Piotr to shame. John gets it, they’re both growing teenagers, and he eats a lot too.
But Bobby? He’s something else.
John never thinks to ask him why he eats so much, because he understands it. Thinks he understands it, at least, until Jubilee makes an affectionately wry comment, and Bobby shrugs and swallows thickly around his mouthful of potatoes.
“It takes a lot out of me,” he explains. “Creating ice from nothing. It’s tiring, you know?”
Jubilee nods sagely, and she clearly understands, but John doesn’t and he hates it. Jubilee creates her sparks and lights from her very being, in the same way Bobby creates ice, but John is different. He can’t create flame, no matter how much he wishes he could, and he doesn’t know what it feels like to do so. Doesn’t know how tiring it is, and it’s just another way he and Bobby are different.
Maybe he’s frowning or glowering or even, God forbid, pouting, because Bobby looks at him in a way that makes John feel like he’s being studied.
And then Bobby pushes his plate towards John.
“I’m not hungry,” he says offhandedly at John’s expression. “You want to finish this?”
Which is dumb as anything, because Bobby is always hungry, and John looks down at the plate and sees roast beef. Bobby’s favourite, which he always leaves for last, but he knows it’s John’s favourite too, and it’s just another way he and Bobby are the same.
John reaches for his fork and tries not to smile too widely.
