Their first anniversary, or what Jess likes to think of as their anniversary, passes in a blur of running and fighting, chasing down a bitch of a poltergeist that’s murdering kids in Idaho. They spend the night patching each other up, before falling asleep in a tangle of limbs, too exhausted to do anything else.

Their second anniversary is not much better. They end up walking into a convienience store that happens to be in the process of being robbed. Sam and Dean disarm the poor guy, while Jess comforts the terrified clerk. The rest of the afternoon is spent at the police station, weaving lies like always.

By the third year, Jess has stopped expecting a perfect anniversary, and finds that she doesn’t really care. Because this is her life now, and she’s happy with that.

She’s soft and warm, squirming under their hands, breathy moans slipping from her lips. Time stopped having meaning long ago, but she thinks they’ve kept her like this for hours, every nerve singing just under her skin, running their hands and lips over her body, keeping her on the edge for so long she thinks she might go insane from it. It never ceases to amaze her when their like this, soft and tender and loving. She hears unspoken words in their touch, things they’re too proud, too scared, too stubborn to say aloud. Mostly, she hears I love you.

There are symbols etched in the handle of the knife and she can feel them against her palm. Light catches on the edge of the blade as she turns it slowly in her hands. It really is a thing of beauty, meticulously crafted and well cared for. She slides it into the sheath and sets it down on the table, next to the small Beretta that Sam had given her. “Happy birthday, Jess.”

Jess screams, stares up at the ceiling, half-blind with tears. Sam is talking to her, quiet and reassuring and she’s gripping Dean’s hand hard enough to bruise, but none of it helps. She drags in a deep breath, heart hammering in her chest, and the doctor tells her it’s okay, it’s almost over, just one more push. Jess thinks she’s crazy, they can’t possibly expect her to do anything more. But Sam is still talking to her, and Dean is stroking her cheek with his free hand, so she grits her teeth and pushes.

It’s been days, weeks, since they had this. Too long, Sam thinks, as he pushes Dean against the wall, pressing his body against his brothers. His skin aches for the sweet contact of bare skin, but they can’t risk it, can’t take the time. Jess will be back soon, and Sam’s mind shies away from what will happen if she catches them like this. Guilt spikes in his gut, bitter and black, but he pushes it away.

He knows it’s wrong, not only on the very fundamental reason of them being brothers, but because he loves Jess, completetly and utterly and if it weren’t for him, she wouldn’t be stuck in this pathetic excuse for a life. But he can’t stop himself, can’t stop from wanting Dean, craving him, needing him. He knows it’s wrong, but he doesn’t want to be right.
