There isn’t anything glamorous about working on the Red Dwarf.

However, Lister finds he doesn’t mind being on Red Dwarf.

The living quarters are bigger than that locker on Mimas, and the drinking partners aren’t the best and brightest he could have, but Lister decides that he can get along on Red Dwarf.

Still. England is entirely too far away, and Rimmer is entirely too close.

Sometimes Lister thinks that if he spends one more day with Rimmer, he’ll figure something out that he doesn’t want to figure out.

Red Dwarf is a huge ship, but it isn’t big enough.

Title: Perfection
Fandom: Red Dwarf
Characters: Lister/Rimmer established
Prompt: 023. Lovers

Author's Notes: Set after Legion, but other than them being on Starbug, no timeline. This is sweet and very, very sweet. Almost sappy.

When they are comfortable with each other, and when the rest of the crew knows, they find themselves able to indulge.

Waking up together, eating together, and avoiding each other.

Kryten was disappointed in them, but he gradually got used to the idea and stopped trying to poison Rimmer’s tea.

Cat hates the idea, but he no longer runs for cover when they enter the common room holding hands.

Early mornings are best, when Rimmer can pull Lister closer and breathe in the scents that have come to represent home to him.

It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty darn close.

It all was an accident, really.

From Kryten crashing the Starbug, Rimmer ending up there and then Lister admitting to Rimmer that he cares more about Rimmer than he strictly should.

Something should have gone just a little differently.

(Admitting it was the easy part, Lister thinks.)

The worst part about it all was that the timing was all wrong.

If Rimmer had been just a little less demented, if Kryten hadn’t figured it out, if someone had put a stop to it before it all screwed up.

(Convincing Rimmer that he was telling the truth is the hard part.)
