008. Bunnies

She remembered the first time she encountered them in her grandfather's shed. First, it was the smell. Then, as her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she saw them hanging there.

Bunnies.

The word didn't work in that context. Bunnies were the fluffy, smiling things that came in an Easter basket, with pink fur, and a ribbon tied around the neck. ( Read more... )

Nice. I like the "droplet of blood puddled at the nose" line. Excellent detail.

(and rabbit is rather tasty, though wild rabbits are kind of stringy)

Thanks. I've taken a good long look at these things myself, so I remembered that detail. (Like the smell, which you never forget.)

I've never had rabbit that wasn't wild, so I couldn't comment, but I do like the taste. It isn't my favourite game. I like moose much better.

Is moose anything like deer? Venison is so good. Man, I have a taste for some venison steaks now.

(I don't recommend groundhog--ew, so nasty)

I wouldn't be able to tell you, since I've never had deer, and we obviously have very different types of game because of our geography - there are no groundhogs here either). The closest I've had to deer would be caribou, and moose is a little different. It's pretty beefy, but without the fattiness. It's really good in a stew. My father and a group of other family members get a hunting license for a moose every year, so there's always plenty to go around (they're really big animals).

Moose were introduced to the island from the mainland, so they aren't native, and they are a serious menace on the highways. I almost met my end because of one, but I managed to come out without even so much as a scratch on the car. Very lucky.

Creepy. I never liked those shops that hang bunnies in their windows. It's just a bit too freaky for me.

Very nice imagery for 100 words. :)

I always found it a bit creepy to see them hanging like that, though I've never seen them hanging in a window. What sorts of places have them on display like that? (I've only ever seeing them like in this drabble, after some relative caught them in a snare.)

Thank you.

Oh well, in NYC, certain ares have them up in their windows. Maybe it's one of those only in NYC things, which is why is makes sense to me?

No, it's probably something you see in most big cities, I would imagine. Restaurants would have to get that stuff somewhere, right?

I'd love to visit NYC again. I went on a trip there during art school, and it was great. The SO and I considered it for our honeymoon, since he went on that trip too, and a significant "first" took place there (in a crappy little hostel - so romantic).
