Tim was a rather curious man. He looked like the negative of a photo of a monk: made of contrast and calm and as flimsy as a leaf. Sometimes, she was afraid to touch him.
“You’re supposed to be here” he said one night as they were sitting on the edge of the Galaxical University’s duck pond.
Lady huffed. “Because it’s my heritage or whatever?”
“No.” Tim dipped a white, white finger into the water, daring a koi to come and nibble on the tip.
Lady smirked. “Because you can see the future and you know I’m going to do epic shit?”
“No.” A scaly friend sniffed the hump of Tim’s finger.
“Then why?”
The koi appeared to consider nibbling on the proffered digit, curious as to what it was. Then, its instinctual paranoia kicked in: it flipped and swam away as fast as it could. Tim took his finger out of the water. There was barely a ripple.
“If you weren’t meant to be here, then I wouldn’t have bothered coming.”

From that distance, she couldn’t hear him cry out. She watched, though, as her arrow pierced his throat, the green and black feathers almost camouflaging the shaft. He stopped, and she imagined his eyes widening as the shock set in. By the time he realized he was dying, he was already dead.
As her mark crumpled to the ground, she was already moving. Her boots were silent against the forest floor, her surroundings seeming to accept her as one of their own. Brown eyes stared up at her as she bent over the body, and her fingers jerked as a sudden chill washed over her. But then it was gone, and she retrieved her arrow and the gold chain that adorned his neck.
There was no reason to remain.
The trees watched her silent escape, her secret joined with theirs, deep in the roots.
