Elfangor knows the meaning of the phrase if only.
It means past hopes and forgotten dreams, and it means pain.
He thinks of his if onlys every day. If only he hadn't stayed on Earth (he couldn't have stayed away), if only he'd stayed on Earth longer (he didn't have a choice). If only he could have saved Arbron (not his fault), if only he could have stopped Sub-Visser Thirty-Seven (always his fault). If only he'd never joined the military in the first place (he was never cut out for it), if only he'd become a harmless scientist or engineer instead (he would have hated it). If only he'd never met Loren (she's worth it all), if only he'd been able to meet his son (just once, just once, Ellimist, only once).
If onlys will get him nowhere, but they do. If onlys got him to Earth one last time. If onlys allowed him to strike one final, terrible blow against the Yeerks. If onlys earned him fame and honor among his people, even as he broke their most important law ( ... )

“You drink as though you’ll find something at the bottom,” she commented, staring at him from the shadows of the corner.
If only, Lucas thought, taking another sip.
“You don’t ever drink?” he asked.
Ynira shrugged. “Only on occasion. I find it dulls the senses more than anything.”
His mouth twisted into a smirk. “I think that’s the point.”
“I’ve known men like you before. Holy men who drink themselves into a stupor when no one is watching.”
Lucas sighed, getting up from the couch and heading for the kitchen. “I’m no holy man,” he said roughly. “And I’m not getting drunk.” He opened the fridge and pulled out a plastic bag. “You hungry?”
She weighed her options carefully, the gold flecks in her eyes reminding him of scales.
“I suppose I could stay,” she said quietly.
