God I feel sick. I got an email which I have copied and pasted below. I thought someone may have made it up originally because if it's true it'll be like the country is becoming like Nazi Germany. But the petition seems genuine. I'm making this entry public so people not on my flist can read this shocking news and sign up.

*PLEASE SEND TO AS MANY ( Read more... )

I heard this. I thought the reason was something to do with muslim kids or something... Oh well. Its kinda stupid. The holocasut and Nazi Germany should be compulsory history in all schools. Forgeting would be a bad idea.

My first thought was "What the hell? Is this April Fool's Day?" Disgusting.

I don't understand the idea behind it. Catering to just one section of the community? I'm also convinced that people of Jewish religion or origin (I'm including converts here) are destined to be persecuted for all time. Because people need someone to demonise, and they may as well pick the easiest target.

I remember being at school and having a kid tell me she couldn't hang around with me because the Jews killed Jesus. That kind of crap came out of her at 8!

I've noticed in my area recently there's a lot of graffiti which is basically a Star of David with a Swastika inside it. Pretty obvious what they mean by that.

It makes me want to dig out my Star of David and start wearing it again...

Ewwww that's revolting! It's something to report to the police! I've got a David star on one of those hands. I used to wear it but not for a long time....

I got a reponse emailed to me today:

The e-petition asking the Prime Minister to "make the teaching of the Holocaust compulsory in secondary schools" is ongoing. This is a response in advance of the closing date from the Government ( ... )

The world is getting more and more 'politically correct' and one day people are going to realise that it's wrong.

If people don't learn about atrocities, what's to stop the same thing happening again?

I just don't understand it.

Well it only says it's not compulsory after 14, makes me wonder if it is before that. I'm know I learnt about WW2 before GCSE as I ended up doing RE for GCSE instead of history or geography. I wouldn't worry too much, I think it's more than likley the vast majority of students will still be taught it anyway through either History or RE - for me it was well covered in both, we barely seemd to do any other historical period and oddly WW1 didn't get much coverage enough though you'd think it would be fairly significant to put the development of the second war into context ( ... )

I didn't want to believe this when I saw it because I just could not believe they would drop it from schools. That's as bad as claiming it never happened! If we forget it and sweep it under the rug so that just a few individuals don't get offended by it then something like it will just happen again.

I wasn't sure whether to believe it or not at first. I signed the petition just in case.

Pathetic, isn't it? Although I knew about the Holocaust from general life, we only ever learnt about it in year 11 English when we studied Night by Elie Wiesel. Had the teachers not picked the book that year, we never would have. I seriously feel that my history studies were of overly poor standard and wish they had been more involved ( ... )

You never learned about it in history? O.o My history teacher was crap but we covered the holocaust so much! I remember watching lots of vids about it with actors reconstructing how Jewish people and people who associated with Jews felt at the time. Nothing was hidden and there was antisemitism at my school. :( Even from teachers ( ... )

Sadly, I only ever did half a semester of Australian settler history in all my schooling (not including dinosaurs). Too bad, because it interests me.

I would rather that Muslim children attended mixed schools, because it allows them to interact with other children and learn about their cultures (and vice-versa). I also thinks it helps them to become more accepting, and for the girls it helps with demonstrating the fact that they are equal in all rights to men. Separation is a bad idea I think.
