But still, I have the ritual - unaltered, more or less - a little raft of calmness that I can cling to and draw strength from in an ocean of fear and death. And I need that strength.
I have to be strong.
I have to survive.
I have to save us all.

I think this, this is the crux of Jake. He feels personally responsible for everyone else. And all the other Animorphs are going through the same thing he is here, and all of them have families to fight for, and each other to save - but I can imagine how the pressure Jake put on himself as leader added that extra fear to every battle.
