House narrowed his eyes when he next walked into his office and noticed that something was not right. He wasn't sure what, but he just moved in and cautiously examined things. Then he saw the envelope on his desk, half tucked under a chart, but he knew it hadn't been there before.

Reaching down for it with his free hand, he leaned his cane against the desk and picked it up, recognizing Cuddy's handwriting almost instantly. He flipped it open and pulled out the sheet of paper, unfolding that to see the short grouping of words on the page.

After he read it, he read it again, then folded it back up and tucked it into the inner pocket of his jacket, grabbed his cane and headed downstairs, this time actually bothering to rap on her doorframe with his cane before stepping inside.

She was signing payroll documents when she heard the knock on her door and, looking up, she hadn't expected it to be House. He never knocked. And because he'd knocked, she knew this was about the letter she'd written. The letter she found herself wishing she hadn't left on his desk. Hadn't written at all.

Tapping her pen on the sheet of paper before her on the desk, Cuddy gave House a solemn look before she sat back and cleared her throat.

"Dr. House," she greeted, trying to remain as aloof as possible; not wanting to appear to know why he was here. "What can I do for you?"

House was quiet for a long moment, just looking at her, before he reached into his pocket and pulled out the letter, still folded, and held it up for her to see.

Not like she didn't already know what this was about. He could tell.

"One question, is all I ask, then I'll scurry back off to my dark and evil lair." He said, with a straight face. "Was this an apology?"

She dropped the pen to her desk with a defeated sigh and gave House a brief almost sheepish look. Steeling herself then, Cuddy lookd back down to her desk and shuffled the papers together busily, trying not to seem as uncomfortable as she felt.

"Do you want it to be?" she replied off-handedly, casting a quick glance up to him to scope his expression. Seeing that he wasn't going to back down, she sighed again and pursed her lips.

Sitting back once more, she folded her arms over her chest. "It was something I felt needed to be said," she finally added as expressionlessly as she could.
